Kept me Safe at Night - Part 2

I've been staring at my childhood nightlight a lot the last two days. It's a funny thing how desperately I needed light on as a kid while I slept, especially when you consider how much as an adult I can't stand any light being on at all. My sleeping style these days? It's all under cover. Sometimes it feels like I may have some oxygen deprivation issues, but it seems I'll choose darkness over breathable air any day.

I finished my owl nightlight painting. I loved painting something I've cherished for over forty years. It resides on the very desk I'm typing at at this very moment. Still watching over me after all this time.

"Kept me Safe at Night"

I began adding reflection marks.

I gave the flowers some shadows.

I added more shadow and colored additional leaves.

Kept me Safe at Night

My big guy moved out today. Suffice it to say that I feel weird. He's twenty, so it's not like he's not an adult and all, it's just strange. Good strange. And then my head jumps to something altogether different, I think to distract myself. I find myself putting on my detective hat and feeling quite sure that I will now solve a years long mystery. Yes, they mystery of which of my sons is not as tidy as he should be when he uses the toilet. Now if my little guy is smart, he'll have error free toileting from here on out so that his older brother will solidly be the suspect, whether the guilt lies there or not.

We shall see....

And I started a still life painting for a class I'm taking. The owl is my childhood nightlight and the flowers I picked from my yard. I love when nature plants beautiful things and surprises us!

I had set up my still life scene with two
colors of scrapbook paper in the back
laid upon a white towel. I then set up
my owl nightlight and the flowers.

I started by painting the background.

I did a quick sketch with watered down black
paint of the objects I was painting.

I painted over them with white so the colors
would show more easily and brightly.

I added more white to the owl and then
began adding the teal tint. I also painted
the flowers.

I added even more details including the
crystals that cover the owl's body and
let the light shine through.

Daisies - Part 2

I got my hair cut today. My long bangs are no longer so long. My hope is that I will now be able to see my creepy family when they sneak up on me and try to scare me...which happens a lot! I told my little guy about how proud I was of my new scare proof haircut.

Little guy: "That's not gonna help, mom."

Well, maybe. I'm sure I won't have to wait long to find out, knowing my guys.

And here's my finished daisies painting. I think daisies spread happiness wherever they go!

"Daisies"

I added color to the flowers and stems.

I added another layer to the background,
worked on the water in the vase,
and added another white layer to the flowers.
I also changed the height of the vase and
lowered its base.

You can see a bit of a splatter in the previous
stage. Rather than cover it up I decided to add more
splatters! I also began adding some gray to the
petals to give them more definition.
I've been incredibly inspired by a class taught by Pauline Agnew. I encourage you to check it out!

Daisies - Part 1

Yesterday at the chiropractor the doctor, who was working on both me and my little guy, said, "You guys are shaped the same." And today at the optometrist the doctor said, "You guys have practically the same prescription." I found myself smiling at the alikeness the two of us have. Not sure if my little guy was as thrilled. He was probably thinking, "Thanks for the slight scoliosis and near sightedness, mom."

A friend of mine posted some daisies on her Facebook page and they were so beautiful that I asked her to send me more photos. And she did! Here's the first of what I hope to be a daisy series. Daisies are such happy flowers...I love them!

Here's the start of this painting.

I painted the basic colors of the background.

I roughed in the basic shapes of the flowers
and the vase.

I began adding in reflections on the glass
and the basic shapes of the flowers.

Whimsical Bouquet

What happens when your husband drags out the water pressure sprayer? Well, on top of doing an absolutely fabulous job of cleaning the driveway and our deck, he created a welcome mat in front of our carport door by using the sprayer as a writing/drawing tool...a big rectangle with the word "WELCOME" right smack dab in the middle of it. I love it!

This painting is a quick exercise I did as part of an art class I'm taking. Super fun and whimsical!

Winter 2

I heard the most delightful thing last night! My son's wonderful girlfriend told me that she can't buy reproduced art any more. Ever since she met me and now has a number of my original paintings she simply can't go back to mass produced art. I love that!

I painted this as a delightful warm-up. It's a companion piece to "Winter" and I've given this one to the same beautiful person who bought the first one. Giving my art away is one of my favorite things.

Majestic - Part 3

Late yesterday when I took my dog, Hazel, for a walk, we came upon a Speedo in the sidewalk. Nothing else. Just a Speedo. I remembered my commitment to pick up the snuff can and dispose of it properly, but I neither wanted to pick up a Speedo nor did I have any idea of what the proper disposal of such a thing would be.

And by the way, Google is of no help with this quandary. I suppose I'll see if it's still there tonight. Perhaps something will come to me.

I finished "Majestic". What an honor it was to paint this. I hope it makes a chunk of money to support elephants when it's auctioned off. Elephants are definitely on my "paint more of this" list.

Here's the completed painting and final stages below.

"Majestic"

I filled in more of the background with varying greens.

I added branches, some flowers, and more grass.
