The Earth Laughs in Flowers

"The Earth laughs in flowers."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

I was given this oval canvas quite a while back. Another artist had started a painting on it and had never finished. It's sat and sat and sat waiting for the right inspiration and I finally found it and lay my own paint all over it. It took me a while to figure out which way was up once I finished this piece, but the drips convinced me that they really wanted to be stems.
Love when my paintings talk to me!

Where I Began

When I first started painting seven years ago my "go to" subject was flowers. All kinds of flowers. They brought me so much joy. And you know what? They still do.

Bonded by our Roots

Lucky for me, just as I was starting this piece a friend dropped off an Anthropologie catalog. All those textures are so inspiring for collage! If you've got some, send them my way.

Abundance

So a funny thing happened on the way to the finish line with this painting. I was laying down the paint for the flowers and my big cat, Pug, lay down beside the painting and flopped his tail right where I'd just put some orange. He then flopped his tail up and "painted" one of our chairs and then he flopped his tail to the side and "painted" my shorts. Love collaborating creatively with you, Pug!!!

A Vessel Full of Tenderness

I've been sitting in the back yard with our big old cat, Pug, today. He's been recovering from some sort of an injury to one of his back legs and is just now wanting to go outside again. He lay under the table on the deck and chicken after chicken came over to him. I think they missed that big hairy dude. So sweet and tender!

Springtime Dream - Part 4

Late last night I realized that my family was looking at me pretty funny. As I said in yesterday's post, it was quite a busy day...and apparently my outfit reflected that busyness.

It all started out pretty normally, outfit wise. I had sneakers, gray capri leggings, and a coral tank top. Then I decided I was a tad chilly so I added a purple hoodie. A while later I put on a brown winter hat. Then I received a call from Dave that a customer was going to stop by so I switched to a black baseball cap. I wanted to look presentable, you know. A while later I cut up an old skirt and made two scarves, one purple, and the other a tie dye/batik looking thing. I put them on, of course.

When Dave got home from exhibiting his photography he just looked at me. Up and down and then away. I think it was simply too much to take in.

P.S. I never made it out of the house except to take some recycling to the bin and to feed the chickens, so no other humans were harmed by my outfit.

I finished this painting. She definitely turned into a bride. I love when the painting takes over and tells me what to do.

"Springtime Dream"

I added color to her hair and a second
coat to the top of her dress.

I decided where her arms would go and
gave her face some features.

I gave her pink highlights and started
working on her bouquet.

I decided I didn't like the colors I'd chosen
so I painted over it with green. I'd decided
that I wanted greenery to show behind
the flowers I painted.

I created a bouquet of white flowers
and baby's breath.

I decided that the painting needed more
flowers. I also created a neckline
on her dress.

Surrounded by Flowers - Part 2

I had a "chat" with Amazon yesterday do to a minor issue with an order I'd received. Throughout the rather stilted, yet effective, conversation I was totally convinced that I was communicating with a robot. Here's part of our conversation.

Me: "Thank you! I appreciate it! Have a great evening!"

Amazon (robot?): "You are very welcome! :) Was I able to properly assist you?"

Me: "Absolutely!"

Me: "Are you a robot? :-)"

Amazon (robot?): "Haha. I am not Kali, I am a real person :)"

Me: "Well, you'd make a darn good robot. Thanks again!"

Amazon (robot?): "Haha. Thank you very much, I guess. Perfect! Have a great rest of your day! :) Please click on "End Chat" located on the upper right corner of the chat window to close the chat."

Me: "OK, bye."

I'm still not convinced that they were a real person. Robots know how to lie, right?

And I finished "Surrounded by Flowers". I'm so happy to be painting again! Here's the finished painting and below are a few of the final stages.

"Surrounded by Flowers"

I went even darker on the edges...
and I didn't really like it.

I added leaves...
and I didn't really like that either.

I went for a happy green/black medium and
that worked for me. I also added a bit of
detail to the centers of the flowers.

Surrounded by Flowers - Part 1

I'm dipping my toes fingers back into painting after slightly over a full week's break. I feel a little like I'm starting over as a beginner...so of course I'm starting with what has always been my "go to" subject matter over the past four plus years...FLOWERS! And happily for me, I've been given a few "speedy recovery" bouquets since my surgery.

Me: "Oh, thank you so much, they're beautiful!!!" And then I'd get my phone out and photograph them from all angles for future reference.

This particular painting is inspired by a lovely bouquet that my big guy and his girlfriend gave me when I got home from the hospital. Love, love, love!!!

I've had this canvas laying around from a previous project
when I just used the left over paint to create a background
for a future painting. Well, today that day came!

I used watered down black to lay out where I wanted
the flowers to be positioned.

And of course I got excited when I started using
color and completely forgot to take photos
of the different stages. Sigh....

I added green to the background.
So much fun painting again!!! Excited to see where this one takes me tomorrow!

That Summer Feeling

Summer break is officially over for me this evening. Tomorrow I start back at work with a job I absolutely love. (I teach three and four-year-old children with disabilities in case you don't know.) And I'm sitting here reflecting on this amazing summer break I've had...and kind of wondering why it's called a "break" as I've been crazy busy.

- I've done a number of commissioned paintings in addition to my daily painting.

- I trained a bunch of wonderful new teachers.

- I've had an exhibit of my paintings.

- I started my fifth year of painting and blogging daily.

- I've taken two painting classes.

- I received a diagnosis that is fixable by surgery (that'll happen really soon).

- I helped my oldest son pack and move out of our house.

- I got my hair cut shorter than it's been in many, many years.

- I started painting much bigger.

- I learned how to do minor surgery on my chickens' feet.

I'm thinking there's more, but those are the things that pop into my blissfully exhausted little head.

What a grand summer it's been!

This is a sweet little practice piece from a class I'm taking. I love the warm summery feeling it has.

Whimsical Bouquet

What happens when your husband drags out the water pressure sprayer? Well, on top of doing an absolutely fabulous job of cleaning the driveway and our deck, he created a welcome mat in front of our carport door by using the sprayer as a writing/drawing tool...a big rectangle with the word "WELCOME" right smack dab in the middle of it. I love it!

This painting is a quick exercise I did as part of an art class I'm taking. Super fun and whimsical!

Orange Burst - Part 2

I like surprises. And today I got one. I went to the cupboard to get a glass for some water and right there with the glasses was a milk carton.

Me: "Um, there's milk in the cupboard."

Little guy: "Oh, did I put that in there? My bad."

Me: "No problem. It's still cold."

Glad to know I'm not the only one to "put things away" in funny places.

And I finished "Orange Burst". Here's the finished painting and below are the last few stages.

"Orange Burst"

I added more details to the background and the flowers.

I worked on the jar hopefully making it look like glass.

I decided it needed one more flower at the top
and the spot on the bottom right needed to be
a flower rather than a sun spot.

We hope you'll go check out our show this month! Details are here.
