Henna

The other day I drew some lovely henna flowers on myself and my son's girlfriend. It was all fine and wonderful until the next day when I realized that both of our henna flowers had faded into nothingness. Apparently my henna had expired.

I figured, hey, that must've just been a practice session.

So to fill my henna void I took out my watercolors and created some henna flowers that would stick around for a while.

Picking and Drawing and So Much Fun

You know that saying...the one that goes, "You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose." Well, for some reason that keeps going through my mind in a totally irrelevant way.

Kind of like this. "You can pick an arm and you can draw on an arm, and you can pick your son, but you can't pick your son's girlfriend, but you can draw on your son's girlfriend's arm."

Yeah, see? Irrelevant. Weird. Nonsensical.

But the thing is this.

- I like to draw with henna on my arm.
- My son picked an amazing lovely young woman as his girlfriend.
- Tonight she let me draw on her arm.

She and I went out on our back deck where it was quiet and gorgeous outside. Then the dogs came out and got all happy and rambunctious. I started drawing but the table was shaking. I put the dogs in. Then the cat jumped on the table and headbutted my hand. I encouraged him to find another spot to hang out. My two sons came out on the deck and immediately started playing hacky sack. The table shook like crazy again and we delicately requested that they go to the carport. And then I finished drawing. (Yes, all of that is my disclaimer as this is the first time I've ever tried to do henna on someone besides myself...and I think it's only maybe my 5th or 6th time ever to do it at all.)

So, the moral of the story is that no matter how shaky things get with your son's girlfriend, something lovely will come out of it.

Here's the henna on her arm and two shots (front and back) of the one I did on my arm tonight.

Can you Spot the Freckles?

In my continuing effort to learn how to draw with henna, here's my latest forearm piece. And I do believe that I'm improving...bit by itty bitty bit.

What I'm suddenly aware of, that I hadn't noticed before, is that I have freckles on my arms. A lot of freckles. So many that I ended up looking at the photo I had taken right after I applied the henna to see if it was just me sloppily splattering henna around.

But nope, I wasn't sloppy, just freckly.

Today's Henna

I'm learning...and possibly even improving.

That's all I can ask, right?

I noticed last night that my previous henna had completely vanished. So of course it was time for another. Of course!

Here's how I think I'm learning and improving.

1. I'm learning that the further away from my hands, the longer the henna seems to last. All that handwashing takes its toll.

2. I'm squeezing the henna bag more gently and evenly. Makes my lines more smooth. I think. I hope. And I don't have a hand cramp. Yup, last time I had a hand cramp that lasted the entire evening.

3. Perfection is the furthest thing from my mind. Happily I don't even know what that word means.

Anyway, this is super fun! Join me sometime!!

For the Love of Rituals

I adore rituals. You know, the awesome little things that become our rituals because we end up doing them over and over again. Like my love of tea. The heating of the water, the steeping of the bag, the blissful experience of the tea as I take that first sip.  Love!

Well, by golly, I think I have a new ritual. Every couple of weeks I think I'll create a new henna drawing on myself. This wee flower on my inner arm is my second try ever. My hand is still shaky as I'm getting used to this exciting and amazing media, but I think I'll improve over time. Practice, practice, practice.

Thanks for going on this henna ride with me!

Nope, my arm isn't for sale, but...Click here to view my gallery.  Most of my paintings are for sale.

I'm my own Canvas

I got to try something new today for the first time ever. I've always wanted to try it. So when a lovely friend invited me to a henna party, of course I said, "YES!!"

While my work is super far from perfect, there are things I wish I could go back in time and change, and likely no one else would want to be stuck with this flawed work on their hand for a week or two, I'm super satisfied and will sport it with pride.

A little while after I'd applied the henna...it's starting to dry and flake off.

After all the henna was washed off.
While my hands are not for sale...

Meant to Fly

I do so love chatting with strangers.  Late yesterday I was walking my dog and caught up with a lovely woman with enchanting tattoos and a fabulous skirt.

Me:  "I like your wings and your bird."  She had wings on the outside of her ankles and a bird rounding her neck.

Lovely woman:  "Thank you...but they don't make me walk any faster."

Me:  "That's because you were meant to fly."

I love science!

My husband is very helpful.  Really it is.  Only sometimes I don't really want his help even if I need it.  Like last night.  I had the hiccups, you see.

So I'm going about my business, not liking the hiccups, but not totally being irritated by them either.  I was trying to make a small dent in the HUGE pile of laundry on our bed when..."BLAAAAAAGGAAAABAAAA!!!!"  Dave scared the living tar out of me.  And I slapped him silly as is my uncontrollable instinct...Whap!  Slap!  Whap-a-slap!

...and then I hiccuped.

So about thirty minutes later, when I was still hiccuping, I put on my jammies determined to go to sleep, hiccups or not.  And then "Wham!"  I was body slammed flat.

Dave:  "Wrestling gets rid of hiccups.  It's scientifically proven."

And about one minute later after hopefully not causing Dave any permanent damage as I fought back against my assailant...my hiccups were gone.

I love science!
