Eruption

Volcanoes symbolize creativity, rebirth, energy...as well as destruction and violence. As will all things, all people, all experiences, there are at least two sides.

Through October 20th I will be donating 50% of my original art sales to the Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL), Texas 21 Chapter. More information may be found here. Let's make the climate great again!

Venus 7

This is the 7th in my Venus series. I started this one thinking I'd do a little abstract piece, but lovely Venus told me, "Nope." Did you know that Venus digs plaid?

Venus 6

I didn't intend to, but I seem to be taking about a two week break from creating art. I've spent about five minutes doing a bit of sketch work, but that's it. I've learned over the past 7 years that my mind/body/spirit lets me know when to take a little time off. But I can feel the urge to paint tickling at the back of my mind and I'm so happy that a rainy weekend is coming up. I find storms particularly inspiring.

In the meantime, I've got a few more small paintings I did during and after our trip to the PNW. Here's another in my Venus series. As a 5' tall woman who gave birth to two big babies (8 lb 2 oz and 9 lb 2 oz) I have a particular love for and appreciation of childbearing hips.

Love and Whimsy

When David and I were in Oregon recently, love and whimsy defined our days...made possible in huge part by our dear friends and hosts. This tiny piece lives there. Lucky little canvas!!

Venus 1

My husband and I have been traveling in the Pacific Northwest and loving every minute of it. Before our trip I prepped a bunch of tiny canvases (2.75" x 2.75" and 1 7/8" x 1 7/8") so I could create art on the road. I've done a number of them and will post them all eventually. Some I'm bringing home and others I've left as gifts for beautiful friends, both new and old.

This one is the first of two (so far) Venus pieces inspired by a lovely and amazing friend.

Embracing my Inner Klimt - Part 2

Sometimes I'm quite sure the poop gods are smiling down on me.

Here's how I know...a few days ago when I was walking our dog, Hazel, in the neighborhood, I saw something in the gutter. It was covered with leaves and a bit of caked mud, but that didn't stop me from picking it up. Well, it was one of those doggie poop bag holders that you clip onto their collar. Cool! I'd always wanted one but I was too cheap to buy one and I just ended up using bread bags and such stuffed into this zipper pouch thing Dave had gotten at a conference.

Well, this morning as Hazel and I were walking around Town Lake I saw something on the side of the trail, covered with leaves and a bit of dirt. It was a brand new roll of poop bags! It still had a sticker on it holding the roll together. I picked it up, tucked it into my new-to-me poop bag holder and kept walking.

I felt prepared for anything! And what did Hazel not do on our walk? Poop. This marks the first time I've every been disappointed in that happening.

And I finished my Klimt inspired piece. What fun! And how amazingly sparkly! Here's the completed piece and the last few stages below it.

"Embracing my Inner Klimt"

I added more swirls.

And more swirls! I also added more details to the blanket.

I took this picture to show just how much it sparkled
in different spots. I love sparkles...and in some
circles I'm actually known as the "Sparkle Fairy".
True story.

Embracing my Inner Klimt - Part 1

I have absolutely no recollection of what Dave and I were talking about, but a new word came out of it. I love when we increase our vocabulary!

Dave: "You're making a persumption."

Me: "Persumption! I love that! Presumption plus perception equals persumption!  That's awesome!"

Dave: "I didn't say that. You need to clean out your ears."

Me: "Then I came up with a new word. That makes me awesome!"

Feel free to use my new word. Unlike Dave I don't copyright my invented vocabulary.

And I started working on a painting inspired by Gustav Klimt. I fell in love with Klimt when I first saw a poster of one of his paintings in a girlfriend's house. It was stunning. Lucky for me, as part of a class I'm taking I began creating a Klimt inspired painting of my own.

I sketched out my design...yes, I borrowed a lot from Klimt.

I painted the background.

I forgot to take photos along the way, so this is after I'd
added a lot of color and gold on the swirls.
I love how the gold sparkles!

I'm feeling the need to add a lot more sparkle!!! Tomorrow....

Where the Grass is Greener

Our chicken, Barry, has made a grand discovery. She prefers to be in the part of our back yard that is not the chicken run. She has managed to verify that the grass truly is greener on the other side of the fence. Know what the best part is? That girl, when she decides that the "grass" in the chicken yard is "greener" because that is where all her peeps are, is able to get right back over the fence to join them.

Chicken love!

Just Breathe...

...except I couldn't.

I wasn't sure why at first. I knew I'd been working out for a while and perhaps I was pushing too hard.  But it didn't feel internal. Nope, this was an issue coming from outside of myself.

So as I was trying my best to keep my feet in the air as my little guy pushed my legs over in today's ab torture strength session, I opened my eyes just enough to realize that his shoes were directly adjacent to my head.

His shoes...his stinky, stanky, funky shoes. His shoes that could peel paint. His shoes that could easily fumigate a small room.

Me:  "Oh, my gosh, your shoes!!!"

Little guy: "What?"

Me: "I can't breathe...your shoes reek."

Little guy: "Oh, sorry, Mom."

He moved a bit away and as soon as I closed my eyes he moved right back. That stinky little turkey.

Payback. Yup, that's what's on my mind.

A New Chance at Life

Every once in a while I really don't like what I paint. Not often because I'm really flexible with my expectations of myself, but at times I can't help but feel like I want to crumple my paper up and toss it in the recycling bin.

I had that feeling a few weeks ago, but I fought the urge thinking that maybe, just maybe, the piece would grow on me.

Well, it didn't. So I decided to chop that painting up into four pieces, layer some acrylic on top, and see where it took me. My Phyllis piece from yesterday was one of the pieces. I liked it MUCH better than before. Today's is also one piece. Only with this piece I left one small portion of the original. And now that part I hadn't liked before...well, now I rather dig it.

So, yeah, don't throw the baby out with the bathwater and all that stuff, right? So fun giving my work a new chance at life.

Whimsical Roots

I did this interpretation of a tree with henna on my forearm. I particularly like the roots, all full of whimsy and personality, not unlike my genetic roots. Have you met my delightful family?

And now that you've seen my forearm, can you tell I've been working out? Nope? Oh, well. I have, ya know. Know how I can tell? When I'm at the gym I have to wait at the top of the stairs while the big muscle bound guys make their way up. I can't possibly fit on the stairway as they come up...I'm sure it's because I've bulked up so much from all those reps. Yup, it's me not them.

Henna

The other day I drew some lovely henna flowers on myself and my son's girlfriend. It was all fine and wonderful until the next day when I realized that both of our henna flowers had faded into nothingness. Apparently my henna had expired.

I figured, hey, that must've just been a practice session.

So to fill my henna void I took out my watercolors and created some henna flowers that would stick around for a while.

Picking and Drawing and So Much Fun

You know that saying...the one that goes, "You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose." Well, for some reason that keeps going through my mind in a totally irrelevant way.

Kind of like this. "You can pick an arm and you can draw on an arm, and you can pick your son, but you can't pick your son's girlfriend, but you can draw on your son's girlfriend's arm."

Yeah, see? Irrelevant. Weird. Nonsensical.

But the thing is this.

- I like to draw with henna on my arm.
- My son picked an amazing lovely young woman as his girlfriend.
- Tonight she let me draw on her arm.

She and I went out on our back deck where it was quiet and gorgeous outside. Then the dogs came out and got all happy and rambunctious. I started drawing but the table was shaking. I put the dogs in. Then the cat jumped on the table and headbutted my hand. I encouraged him to find another spot to hang out. My two sons came out on the deck and immediately started playing hacky sack. The table shook like crazy again and we delicately requested that they go to the carport. And then I finished drawing. (Yes, all of that is my disclaimer as this is the first time I've ever tried to do henna on someone besides myself...and I think it's only maybe my 5th or 6th time ever to do it at all.)

So, the moral of the story is that no matter how shaky things get with your son's girlfriend, something lovely will come out of it.

Here's the henna on her arm and two shots (front and back) of the one I did on my arm tonight.

And, just a reminder, my forearm is decidedly not for sale, I find I need it

Something New...Something Blue

I love trying new things, I really do, but something I just did for the first time ever is not working out so well for me.

You see, I managed to bite my tongue in what appears to be the absolute, perfect way to bruise it good and plenty. While I've bruised pretty much everything else at one time or another (I tend to walk into things a lot), who knew that it was even possible to bruise a tongue?

Anyway, I'll be distracted by this whole event for a while...I figure my entire sense of reality has undergone a shift.

Crazy Works

I haven't a clue as to why, but I've had the hiccups every day for a while. And I remembered that recently I'd heard of some crazy weird remedy on an NPR show. So since I was driving when this last bout came on, I had the kid look up the known remedies.

Little guy:  "Try holding your breath."

Me:  "That's what I have been doing. HIC!  It's not working."

Little guy:  "Eat a spoonful of sugar."

Me:  "Nope, that'll make me feel even worse.  HIC!"

Little guy:  "Drink some water and put your fingers in your ears at the same time."

Me:  "HIC!  That's the one I heard about!  You have to help me do that when we get home."

Little guy:  "I'm not going to put my fingers in your ears or help you drink."

Me:  "Gee...HIC!"

So, dejected and on my own at home, I took a big gulp and held the water in my mouth, put my fingers in my ears, and then swallowed.

And it worked!

...yet another fabulous reason why I love NPR.

The Lift

I discovered something funny a few days ago.   Apparently I managed to have an eye lift at the age of eighteen months.

When I was a wee one I had a barbel shaped growth over my left eye.  It was going out just under my eyebrow, and going in...straight into my brain.  The thing had to go.  So go it did and I've had a cool scar ever since then to mark the occasion.

But as I've aged, apparently the skin over my eyes has puffed and sagged just a tad.  Only the thing is, not so much on that left side, the one that had the major surgery.

So, yup, that eye lift is enhancing my asymmetry...and my left side youthfulness...I dig it.
