It's Hip to be Square

With family in town I've loaded up my phone with tons of adorable photos...which has prompted my phone to nag me about the lack of space. So I started going through my oldest pictures and came across a photo I'd taken some time back of three sweet little flowers. I remember being so taken by their nifty squarish petals. How cool of Mother Nature to prove that it's hip to be square.

In Flight

I had the close encounter with a mosquito today. It was in the school's bathroom flying around. As soon as I did my business and flushed I tried to get that mosquito. Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! Miss...miss...miss...miss.

I gave up and left. And then I had to explain to the woman in the workroom outside of the bathroom that I was not, in fact, applauding for myself for a job well done.

I think she believed me. Maybe.

This painting is another in the style of Marie Laurencin that I've worked on as part of a class I'm taking.

Revealed

We made the decision to have our chickens live free range in our back yard. We love it. They love it. The cats love it. And even our dog loves it. Seriously, there's nothing quite as adorable as looking out your back door and seeing six chickens standing over a peacefully sleeping cat.

But one interesting thing about having free range chickens in the back yard is that in the process of all the hunting, pecking, and scratching they do in what used to be our lawn, they have excavated years and years of buried kid toys. They've dug up matchbox cars, playset tools, parts of balls, and tons of scraps of unidentified material. They've even found toy soldiers (my kids never had those, so these must be from previous families' kids). They're digging up stuff that's been buried up to 25 years ago or more!

And what have I done with these treasures? Well, I've rather unceremoniously tossed them in our trash.

Just Breathe...

...except I couldn't.

I wasn't sure why at first. I knew I'd been working out for a while and perhaps I was pushing too hard.  But it didn't feel internal. Nope, this was an issue coming from outside of myself.

So as I was trying my best to keep my feet in the air as my little guy pushed my legs over in today's ab torture strength session, I opened my eyes just enough to realize that his shoes were directly adjacent to my head.

His shoes...his stinky, stanky, funky shoes. His shoes that could peel paint. His shoes that could easily fumigate a small room.

Me:  "Oh, my gosh, your shoes!!!"

Little guy: "What?"

Me: "I can't breathe...your shoes reek."

Little guy: "Oh, sorry, Mom."

He moved a bit away and as soon as I closed my eyes he moved right back. That stinky little turkey.

Payback. Yup, that's what's on my mind.

I Only have Eyes for Worms

A shift has occurred in the chicken space continuum.

It used to be that I'd walk in our chicken yard and only Phyllis would come-a-runnin'. Well now Barry, Maury, and Ernie come-a-runnin', too.

"What happened?" you ask.

Well, I'll tell ya what happened.

I started lifting some of the pavers we have out in their yard and exposing the fabulous delicacy that earthworms are. I did this a few times over several days and now I'm officially the Worm Lady in their sweet little beady chicken eyes. I swear all they see is a big earthworm in tennies.

I'm good with that. I'm feeling' that chicken love.

Chicken with a Beard - American Cancer Society Fundraiser

One of our sweet little chickens, Piper, has an eye infection. She's been patient for the most part as I work on cleaning her eye regularly, but every once in a while she lets out a squawk of protest.  And lucky for that chicken, her faithful friend, Hazel, our big dog, is always right at her side to lend a sympathetic whimper.

I adore their unlikely friendship.

I'm finally getting around to fulfilling a friend's challenge to put a beard on a chicken.  After all, why not?  People have beards.  Billy goats have beards.  Even my dog, Hazel, sports quite a beard when her hair grows long.

So, I give you, chicken with a beard.

Again, I'll donate the sales of these bearded wonders to the American Cancer Society in memory of my wonderful and totally not bearded, yet cool as all get out, Nana.
