Soar

When I first started this painting and was in the initial stages of layering, three figures stood out, and the word "soar" popped into my mind. I continued to paint and they continued to remain a presence. Last night I photographed it, turned off the living room lights, and went to bed. This morning as I ate my breakfast I looked at the painting from across the room, a good twenty feet or so, and noticed that there was a cross on the top figure. I had not noticed it as such during any stage of the painting. It was simply another bit of under layer. So as a person who has not embraced any religion I was left in a state of wonder. Not only wonder, as in awe, but also wonder as in "I wonder if I should diminish its appearance in some way." But my painting had told me last night (yes, my paintings communicate with me) that it was finished, and so I am listening.

Recently I wrote a piece for a group I'm a part of. "Faith" was the topic. Here's an excerpt:

"I don’t have a big picture feeling about faith in regard to faith religion-wise, though I do believe there is something bigger, some sort of guiding force. Faith when used in the context of “I have faith in,” does hold great meaning. I have faith in friendship, faith in the ability of people to choose to do good things, faith that things tend to work out, faith that expressing my gratitudes and intentions bring great beauty to my life, and faith in myself."

All Things Change

I'm taking an art class from Jenny Doh, whom I've long admired. This is my first piece from her class.

And I read a quote today in a book I'm reading for a book study that I'd like to share.

"In a true dialogue, both sides are willing to change. We have to appreciate that truth can be received from outside of - not only within - our own group...We have to believe that by engaging in dialogue with another person, we have the possibility of making a change within ourselves, that we can become deeper."
-Thich Nhat Hanh

The author, bell hooks, used the quote in the preface to her book "Teaching Community, A Pedagogy of Hope".

Into the Flow

I've not painted much recently. Just taking a break for no particular reason. However, a few weeks ago David was taking a photography class and wanted to use me as a subject...a subject who was painting. So as he clicked I drew and painted. I had so much fun.

In the Depths of Thought

Over the past several weeks I've been juggling a lot of work and grabbing a moment here and there to take an online class from the amazing Pauline Agnew. I've taken several of her courses and I always feel that I grow as an artist under her teaching. I'll be blogging about more of my pieces in the coming days.

The Secret was Hers Alone

My husband and I will be part of the West Austin Studio Tour the next two weekends.
Please consider yourselves invited! Click here to get to the facebook invitation.

A friend of mine makes the most amazing baskets from gourds. With each basket she creates there is a bit of the gourd left unused. This is my second piece using a part of a gourd. What a wonderfully unique surface to paint on.

Warrior

Watch me.
I will go to my own Sun.

An Uneasy Hope

I've been inspired by angels lately. Their mystery and beauty fascinates me so. I imagine that if they're there they are watching and waiting to see how this new year unfolds...perhaps filled with an uneasy hope.

Personally, I'm filled with an abundance of hope. For me there's no other choice. May everyone's 2017 be filled with love, learning, joy, fulfillment, and reflection. xoxo

Angel

I've always been fascinated by angels. I remember as a child finding them so intriguing and magical, in spite of, or perhaps because of my upbringing which was void of religious teachings.

Field of Blue - Part 3

A couple of days ago Dave, our little guy, and I went to go visit our big guy's apartment that he shares with his wonderful girlfriend. Our big guy moved out a couple of weeks ago and this was our first trip there. The apartment is fabulous, the food we ate after seeing it was fabulous, and then some sweet awesomeness happened.

We went to a small shop downtown and they had a chest full of photo props. Well, the boys and I each put on pink bob wigs...and my, oh my, did they ever rock that look. They were downright pretty! And while they have maintained their given hair color, I, by the time I was their ages, had dyed my hair every color of the rainbow, literally. Pink being one of those colors (though I don't think that pink is officially a rainbow color).

It was nice to have a glimpse of my little apples not falling too far from their mama tree.

I finished my bluebonnet painting. It's on the abstract side and I'm happy with it. I hope Dave thinks I did his beautiful photo justice. Here's the finished painting and below are a couple of the last stages.

"Field of Blue"

I felt it absolutely, positively needed more flowers.

I added details to the flowers and darkened some of the
trees in the far background. All that was left was to
detail the grass, add some clouds and other kinds of flowers,
and paint the edges of the canvas.
