Through the Eyes of a Child

Angel

I've always been fascinated by angels. I remember as a child finding them so intriguing and magical, in spite of, or perhaps because of my upbringing which was void of religious teachings.

Be Mindful

I began this painting a couple of days after the election. I was feeling keenly aware of the need for mindfulness...that our nation's children are looking to us to show them how they may remain positive and loving in this world. I had planned on adding many more layers but somehow she felt complete as is, her rawness making the need for our mindfulness that much more powerful.

The moon danced with the stars on the night you were born...

I was captivated by this quote (unknown author) and wanted to build it into a painting.

"The moon danced with the stars on the night you were born..."

I love the texture!
This painting is part of a year-long online art class (instructor Gillian Lee Smith).

Grandson with Rainbrella

Note: I changed the title of this piece because I'd forgotten the cutest name for an umbrella that this child had come up with. Love!

Previous title was "Sun Shower"

...or, rather, grandson shower.

A dear friend sent me a photo of his adorable grandson standing in the yard holding an umbrella and asked if I'd be willing to paint it. What an honor it is to be trusted with friends' precious memories!

Painting this reminded me of standing in my own yard growing up (partly because this friend of mine happens to live in the house I grew up in, though this image is not at that particular house). I'd throw my umbrella to the roof, climb the loquat tree in the front corner of the house, get on the roof, open that umbrella, and jump off. Over and over and over again. I very clearly remember thinking that the umbrella in no way slowed my eight foot descent.

To the Side

Every night I tuck my chickens in. This entails going to their coop and doing a head count. And by head count I mean that I actually reach in and give all six girls a little love. And every night Fuzzy, our littlest one, refuses to face me. The trouble for her is that I still totally know she's looking right at me. Eyes-on-the-sides-of-your head problems.

Chicken love....

Asleep

You know how when your kids were little you could just stare at them for hours on end...as they played, as they ate, as they sang and danced. But once they become teenagers if you attempt to stare at them, you're greeted with, "What are you looking at?!?!"

So while I'm not always a huge fan of teenage hormones, I have to say that I've found a perk that I particularly love...the "sleeping in" perk. When I go into their rooms at noon on the weekends to wake them up so they can finally start their day, I'm afforded uninterrupted staring time. I can leisurely take in the serenity of their sleeping faces, the way they sleep as though they know they're safe, the shadow of a mustache appearing, and the small twitches of their dreaming eyes. Occasionally they'll wake up and catch me, admonishing me with a "You're creepy, mom!" But most of the time I'm able to lean in and kiss their cheek to wake them up.

Pure mommy bliss.

The Mother Archetype

I've just completed the second in a series of feminine archetypes as part of an amazing class I'm taking.  This one represents the mother archetype.  (Click here to see the first one I did and information on the class.)

I kept envisioning mothering our children even after our mothers or we as mothers are gone.  The mother is ghostly and mothering from beyond.  The child is still full of life...and still being mothered.

And I have to admit that this is the first painting I've ever painted that actually turned out just as I'd imagined.  At almost 1000 paintings, that's kind of amazing to me.  Not that I've never done it before...rather that I actually did it!

Here's to all you mothers, both still on earth and those beyond.
