A Renaming

So it turns out we can no longer call our kitten a "kitten".  Why?  Because he's so darn cute, that's why.

Little guy:  "I've renamed him.  He's not a "kitten" he's a "cuten".

Yup, the name seriously fits.

Turns Out I DO Take Work Home with Me

So what happens when my kid knocks a new jar of pesto out of the cupboard?  Well, aside from a huge CRASH!!!, I find out that I do take work home with me.  It's not as bad as it sounds.  I'm actually quite disciplined about not taking my work home with me.  But as we're cleaning up the shardy, basily, olive oily, pine nutty, parmesan cheesy mess, my kid says, "You missed a piece of glass over here...oh, wait, it's just glitter.  Must be from your work."

Yup, sure 'nuf.  While I don't bring paperwork home from my job, I absolutely, positively do bring sparkly bits into the house now and then.

Everybody Loves Getting a Package

Right?  But I realize now that I prefer loving receiving my packages without an audience.

The other day I saw the familiar brown uniformed gentleman walking up to my door, ringing my bell, and walking away.  I felt all giddy as I skipped to the door, opened it, yelled "Thanks!" and brought it in.

Me:  "Yay, for me, me, me, me, me, me, me!!!"

Little guy who unbeknownst to me had walked into the room, seen my reaction, and was standing behind me:  "Boo!"

OK, now that was embarrassing.

Oh, well...I GOT A PACKAGE!!

I've Found a Silver Lining to the Common Cold

I've managed to find the silver lining to having this delightful cold of mine.  As I walk about the house, already in my P.J.s at 5:30 PM, borrowed large ugly terrycloth bathrobe almost touching the floor, and the area between my upper lip and nose glistening with coconut oil as I try to stave off the under-nose, flaky skin dandruff that always seems to show up after a million nose blows...I'm apparently exempt from all requests to prepare food for others.  One look at me and, well, aside from obviously not wanting to catch my cooties, they've pretty much lost their appetites.

Well, to them I indignantly say, "I'm pretty!"

No one is buying what I'm selling.

My Dogs have Super Powers

I've decided that my dogs have super powers.  Totally different super powers.  And it all relates to kitten love.  Yes, I know, I'm a little obsessed with all things kitten these days...deal with it.

My dogs, when combined, make for a perfect companion for our newest little furry fella.  Hazel's super power is playing hard...super hard in a super gentle way.  She and our kitten, Tommy, play for hours and hours throughout the day.  Hazel is 81 pounds.  Tommy is 7 pounds.  It's seriously adorable.  Our old lady Scout's super power is snuggling.  Any time of day Scout is available for a little super cuddle time.  When Tommy isn't playing with Hazel, he's likely to be snuggled up to Scout, catching one of his many daily catnaps.

Yup, my super dogs complete each other and are absolutely, positively a kitten's best friends.  I think they might just get capes for Christmas.

Daddy Training

I've come to the conclusion that my big guy is actively engaged in daddy training with all this kitten care.  He's had to deal with all the predictable body fluids, the spazzy behavior, the being woken up at all hours of the night, and the expenses of food and doctor bills.

He's even getting the safety part down.

Me, upon going to his room:  "I neeeeeeed the kitten."

He handed Tommy to me.

Big guy:  "I had to move all the thumb tacks from the bottom of my bulletin board to the top because Tommy kept pulling them off and chewing on them."

Me:  "You're a good dad."

I'm thinking that my someday grandchildren will have chosen their dad well.

Lemonade Love

My yard without a lemonade stand looks nekkid!  I think this is the first time in about ten years that there's not a lemonade stand in front of my house during the Austin City Limits Festival.  Apparently being almost fifteen is too old.  And being eighteen is WAY too old.

But...when it all started, and the little guy was four and the big guy was eight, they'd hold up signs and enthusiastically shout to passers by.

"Ice cold lemonade!!!!"

My little guy would run down a house or two and try to talk folks walking down the street into making a purchase from his big brother.  My big guy would hold down the fort managing the money and distributing the bev's.

It's funny when a tradition finally goes by the way-side.  Funny, nostalgic, and totally appropriate.  Those little salesmen will be missed this year, I'm sure.  Feeling super glad that I still have one of their signs from the first lemonade stand ever.

Take the Time to See what's Below

My dog and I have been wondering about something as we go for our nightly walks.  Every time we pass a particular area, it's like the grass, weeds, and all other plant life come to life.  They shake, rustle, and move about in a curiously alarming fashion that takes us both by surprise every time...even though by now we should expect it.

Well, the other night I decided I was going to figure out exactly what was going on.  So, Hazel and I walked our normal path, heard the first hints of movement, and stopped in our tracks.  We waited for a surprisingly short amount of time and suddenly mice were everywhere!  They ran in front of us, behind us, around us, back and forth into the brush...it was AWESOME!

So now it's our routine to walk very slowly through this area taking the time to gaze as these marvelous little creatures as the emerge from and dive into their burrows, as they chew on bits of grass, and as they do what I'm quite sure is simply play.

We love 'em!

Racing Stripes

I was driving down the highway today and saw a sporty version of a car like mine.  You know, a Prius with racing stripes.

Me:  "My Prius should totally have racing stripes!"

Little guy:  "Your car doesn't deserve racing stripes, mom."

Me:  "But I want them!"

And with a pout on my face I drove us home.

Me:  "Let's look at it and imagine it with racing stripes."

Little guy:  "Look, mom, you have cat prints all over the hood of your car.  That's more you."

...pretty sure my kid just kind of called me a crazy cat lady.

Dawgs!

I love to ride my bike!  Seriously, it's my favorite accessory.

This morning as I rode around the lake I came to the area where everyone is allowed to have their dogs off leash.  I love this part of the trail.  Happy running dogs are everywhere, running after thrown balls, jumping into the lake, panting full of straight-up bliss.  I always take it slow as I ride through...you know, the dogs own that part, I yield to them.  While most of the dogs are savvy, looking before they dart across the trail, this morning I encountered what must have been a three-ish month old puppy.  It zigged, it zagged, it crossed right in front of me, stopped and just looked..."What the heck is this human on?!?!"  It was the cutest little being ever and totally made my day.

And, like every time I get home from my morning bike rides, my dogs run out and give my bike an olfactory inspection, and then give me that look I both adore and expect...

"You've been with other dogs!"

Channeling my Inner Rube Goldberg Machine

Ah...that lovely moment when....

OK, wait, let me tell you this first.  When my little guy first wanted to take karate I told him, "Yes, absolutely!  On one condition.  You may never, ever use the karate on me."  He agreed, of course, though I could tell he was seriously disappointed.

Anyway, when....

...you're with your kid at a karate tournament over the weekend, and said delightful kid is feeling happy and keyed up, and the wonderful little guy does a quick little spin and a back kick fully intending to miss you completely, and his rather large man-size-on-a-boy foot taps your elbow from beneath, and your innocent little elbow goes up causing your equally innocent hand, which is holding an equally innocent cup, to raise up and knock you on the underside of the chin, which hurt a surprisingly lot!

Me:  "You got me in the face, dude!"

Little guy:  "I got you in the elbow.  You hit yourself in the face."

Little guy's friend:  "Now's not the time to deny it, now's the time to hug your mom."

And hug me he did.

Thinking there's a slight possibility that I might just milk this one for a few more hugs...you know, if he wants to keep taking karate and all....
