Me...ish

Since summer began I've started each day with eyes closed and thoughts of gratitudes and intentions. I've done five sun salutations every single day upon rising. I've gathered my hair up in asymmetrical clumps on each side of my head and worn the same three outfits (except for that one day I got all fancy and put on overalls). I've worked on writing five days a week and played the piano every single day. And I have been painting again.

I'm not quite like the me I knew before all of this, but I'm me...ish, and being me-ish is a good thing.

"Me...ish"

I'm taking an online portrait class and this is my first piece.

The Smell and the Taste of Things

I'm taking a wonderful online class and this was the next thing to work on...a nose and a mouth. I have this silly little inner voice that wants to pick it apart and be critical, but my awesome inner voice says, "Hey, you can actually tell it's a nose and a mouth!"

Yeah, I'm gonna listen to my awesome inner voice.

I'm super excited to learn more about drawing and painting faces!

Flower Power

I'm taking an online course about dreams and using art as a vehicle for expression.  I was super lucky and won my spot in this class.  I began and finished my second project this morning (my first project can be seen here).  The lesson I did today was designed to be about nightmares...but I don't really have them.  At least not for a long time now.  I have awkward dreams, you know, showing up wearing the wrong things (or not enough things) at events and such, but being chased, scared, etc....well, it doesn't really come up.  So I decided I'd switch to nightmarish daydreams instead.  Still nothing terribly scary or anything like that, just repetitive thoughts that keep coming up and, I suppose, sort of "haunt" me.

So, below is my final product.  But what you can't tell is that first there were a lot of words.  Then a delicious series of skulls and crossbones.  And then a layer of flowers, fun, and whimsy as I decided to let thoughts of those take over.

If you look closely you'll likely see some silly skeletons peeking out...perhaps those negative thoughts are just coming out to stop and smell the roses.

Catching some Dreams

I hardly ever win anything.  Really, it's quite rare.  But recently I won two totally different, totally amazing online art classes...one that focuses on dreams and the other is a season pass to a bunch of different awesome classes.  I'm so honored and excited!!  You'll likely see some changes in my upcoming pieces as I dive into trying new things, thinking new thoughts, and exploring new mediums.

OK, so what's funny is that ever since the dream class went live, I've been remembering my dreams.  Usually I wake up, go about my day, and am unfazed by my dream life.  But these days I wake up conscious of what I've dreamt, more often than not.

And, by golly, they've mostly been about school.  Just like when I was a kid.  And, by George, they've mostly been about forgetting something or getting something terribly wrong.  Really like when I was a kid.  Only adult style...as in, "I'm the teacher now."  Here's a taste.  Note:  please only send me your interpretations if you think my dreams indicate that I'm brilliant, amazing, and wonderful.  None of that crazy lady stuff, deal?

• My former student was actually my age, but still looked four-years-old, and I had to give her a ride to San Antonio because her feet wouldn't reach the pedals.

• My classroom was actually in a basement, with no supplies, steam hissing from pipes above, and parents dropping their children off seemingly unconcerned.

• Oh, and yes I did wear my pajamas to school.  Not traumatic at all, just comfy, thank you very much.

Excited to see what tonight will bring!

Critter Love

I tell ya what...this girl is seriously lucky to have a husband who truly understands her.

As Dave walked out of the house this morning:  "Kali, come quick!"

It was an armadillo walking in our driveway, then to the back yard, then under our deck.  I loved it!!!

As Dave pulled out of the driveway a few minutes later I received a call:  "Kali, there's a baby dove in the street that needs you to move it somewhere safe!"

And I ran right out there and did.

So glad Dave gets me!

P.S. The armadillo has taken up residence under our deck.  I love it...the dogs love it...the cat snubs his nose at it.

Thanks for "liking" my blog posts!!
