Dream Magnet

For a long time now we've had an ugly, bare rectangular magnet on our fridge. It was part of one of those memo pads you hang on the fridge. I'd long since used up the memo pad but couldn't bring myself to toss the magnet. "I can find a use for this!" I'd thought. Well, it lived on the side of our fridge, ugly AND unused for a long time. So after my recent magnet beautification I remembered this one and beautified it as well. And now I love this little magnet!! Dreams can come true...even if you're a magnet.

Hope

"Hope is the ability to hear the melody of the future." - unknown author

"Hope"
This piece began as a quick pencil sketch, then ink over that, and then it sat for a while as I pondered what to do next. I kept feeling like I should finish her out, adding color to her entirety, but my inner voice kept saying, "Leave her be." And I did...all except for the heart as it was sending echos of a piece I did in early November ("Your heart knows the way. Run in that direction.")

Day 5

Words and feelings: outline, highlight, completion, wonder, peace, color

Dream

When someone encourages me to be messy with my work, I jump right in...it's my favorite! I loved creating so many amazing layers, intentionally leaving the collage part that said "DREAM" to shine through. The face is based on Buddha's. And best of all, this painting actually sparkles!

Dreamer - Part 3

"Dreamer"
I neglected to document the final stages of this painting. In addition to giving her wavy hair and adding some green to the background, I painted over her right eye at least five times as I tried and tried to get that eye right...not too heavy, not too light, just right. I'm not sure it's "just right", but it is right enough. I like that her face isn't that of complete serenity. There's just the slightest touch of angst. Just like in all of us.

Dreamer - Part 2

My little guy got some chips today at a Subway. They were biscuit and gravy flavored. Have you ever heard of such a thing? They had other crazy flavors, too, but I only offered to pay for one bag and that's the one he picked. Against my better judgment, I tried one of them. And you know what? Those crazy chips did taste exactly like biscuits and gravy. I felt like I was on some futuristic TV show where I ordered a meal in a pill form and it tasted like the meal I wanted. While I can't really recommend them as a yummy addition to any meal, I will definitely recommend them as a weird space-age taste experience.

I've continued working on this painting but I'm not ready to call it done. I still have work to do on her. I like the direction it's heading, though. Maybe tomorrow will be "finish" day.

I extended her chin lower and added more color
to her hair. I also added more ribbons.

I added a brown tone to her hair.

I added even more brown and lengthened her eyelashes.
I think they're too thick and dark. I also added
pink to the ribbons and darkened her lips.

I lightened her lashes and worked on the background a bit.

Dreamer - Part 1

Even dogs like to feel fancy. I don't know about bows, painted nails and such, but I do know that when I put a bandana around Hazel's neck she clearly releases her inner cowgirl and struts her stuff. So this week she's got her pink outfit on. I'm thinking a sporty red for next week.

I started on a new painting. I've been exploring all things flowers and loving it!

I started with an abstract background, fully
planning on painting over much of it.
I laid in the basic shape of a woman
wearing a floral headband.
I added color to a lot of the elements.
I added texture to her hair and added another layer to
her face, neck, shoulders, and dress.
I added another layer of paint and
added highlights to the flowers.
I also added ribbons.
She still needs tons of work. Her chin isn't big enough and I want to work on her flesh tones. I also want to do more with her hair.

Ideas Flow

I'm super lucky to have a kid who is super flexible about allowing his mama's ideas to flow...even if they're flowing all over him.

Today my mom and her lovely boyfriend came over for a late Christmas celebration. As was the tradition each year when I was a kid, my mom brought out all sorts of ornament making supplies. Everyone sat down and diligently began creating ornaments.  Me?  Well, while I did not make an ornament, I did let my creativity flow.

I clipped sparkly bits in my little guy's hair. Then I stuck golden squares to his cheeks to create "freckles". Then I hung beads around his neck. Then I put a sparkly choker around his forehead.

I'm thankful for fun family events and for my awesomely flexible kid.

This painting is also an ideas flow kind of thing. I just did random strokes, then stared at it for a bit until things simply managed to appear. Such fun!

Dream Castle

What makes me wish I could dash away to my very own dream castle?

Mornings like this....

Me:  "What, honey?"

Little guy:  "That was my butt."

Me:  "I responded to your butt?  This is a new low for me."

Big Wing Dreams

One of our sweet chickens has a problem.  A wing problem.  While Fuzzy's body is about the same size as the other chickens, her wings are about half the size of her peeps (see what I just did there?).  When we hold our other chickens and let them fly out of our hands, their wings spread beautifully and they do that "almost fly" thing that chickens do.  When we hold Fuzzy and let her fly out of our hands, her teeny, tiny wings flap furiously making a whirring sound, and she falls to the ground twisting and turning Woodstock style.

But I'm quite sure that when she gets in the coop each night, closes her eyes, tucks her head into her teeny, tiny wing, that she has the most amazing big wing dreams a chicken could have.

Sweet Dreams

I've been taking a wonderful year-long online class, Dancing with your Dreams. I completed this piece just this afternoon and soon it will find its home over our bed.

It's layer upon delightful layer...colors, symbols, fun, whimsy, and love.

Ooh, and it's my biggest canvas to date, 24" x 30", not counting our hallway, of course. Hmmmm...I don't know if bigger is better, but it sure is fun!  Come on by and visit me and my paintings!!

Sweet dreams!

The Best Nap Ever!

I had the best nap ever today!  Seriously, it's one of those naps that will go down in my history book as the best nap I've ever had.  I was concerned that I'd go about the rest of the day, heck, the rest of my life like that girl in "American Pie" who went on and on about "that time at band camp" if I didn't just get it down on paper screen.

So here's the scoop.  (Because I know you want to know.)  The nap rocked.  It wasn't just one of my regular fifteen to twenty minute catnaps.  Nope.  It as a glorious two-and-a-half hour, solid, blissful snooze.  And here's why I think it happened.  I didn't just crawl into bed with all my clothes on ('cept shoes, of course).  I changed back into my PJs.  My mind, body, and soul knew that this girl was committed.  And so did my old cat, Pug, my young dog, Hazel, and my old dog, Scout...because by the time I woke up, Pug was nestled in by my face with my arm around him, Hazel was at the foot of the bed snoring, and Scout was asleep on the floor as close to the bed as she could get.

And the cherry on top?  I woke up rested, not zombified.  And with a teeny, tiny flower on my sheets that had fallen off of Pug.

OK, I might just have to tell you in person about my best nap ever...because it was just so awesome.  Feel free to point somewhere behind me whilst saying, "Look!", and run far, far away from me if I bring it up.  I promise I'll understand.

She Dreams

I've shaken up my routine lately.  Dave got us gym memberships and I've been doing that for a while now...which meant I blew off all the dog walking I was doing.

(Insert image in your mind of my dogs pouting.)

Well, last night I returned to the land of dog walking.

(Insert image in your mind of my dogs smiling.)

And instead of having my ear buds in with NPR shows playing, I heard birds and wind and the pitter patter of my dogs' feet.  Instead of being in my own little world, I made eye contact with others and said, "Hello."  Instead of absorbing thoughts of other authors' stories, I was able to be lost in the creation of my own.

Blissful sigh...she dreams.

The Dream

A teenager and a young girl walked into the women's locker room.  Here's what I heard.

Big Sister:  "Man, I wish our parents didn't live at our house.  Everything would be so much easier."

Little Sister:  "But that wouldn't last very long because we wouldn't have money."

Big Sis:  "You're messing with the dream.  In this dream we don't have to worry about that.  It's a dream!!!  You're no fun."

I walked outa there smiling at what must be pretty much ever older child's dream and every younger child's area of concern.

Ah...the dreams of childhood.

Mad Science - Parsons Style

We conducted an unintentional experiment the other night.  It froze here.  Down to about 27º.  And here's what the Parsons family did...in the name of science, of course.  We did two things as an experiment to see what will freeze and what will not.

1. We left our plants outside.  We only have 3 because we happen to have conducted this same experiment in the past.

2. We left a case of Gatorade in the car.

Results:

1. Plants freeze.

2. Gatorade doesn't.

Not sure what we'll do with our results...except perhaps consider putting Gatorade in our radiators (Do cars even still have them or did they go the way of the carburetor?).  Somehow I don't think we've really learned our lesson about plants.
