What is Lovely Never Dies

"What is lovely never dies, but passes into another loveliness.

Star-dust or sea-foam. Flower or winged air."

-Thomas Bailey Aldrich

This past weekend our family joined the many, many thousands of families who have lost someone they loved to COVID. May their memory live on through all that is beautiful.

I See your True Colors

They shine through, my friends.

"I See your True Colors"
Original available here for $125.
24"x24"
Prints available on request.

I started painting over some of my older paintings. This is the first of a number of paintings I'll be doing this with. The first stroke was the hardest, and then I embraced the freedom.

This is the painting I painted over.

The first stroke was the scariest one.

Love is...

When I started this painting it immediately felt like a "Calgon, take me away" piece. Since November I've had a number of politically weightier pieces and this one is decidedly not that. I love using writing in my art and I wrote and wrote what I wish for my children, for my family, for my friends, for everyone...all that love is. And then topped it with some delicious whimsy.

Notes to my Teenage Self

I started this painting with the intention of letting go of parts of me and my life that were no longer serving me well. It quickly became a nurturing piece feeding the soul of my teenage self. I suppose letting go of things needed to start there. It's filled with words of wisdom, encouragement, and love for a seventeen year old who had just lost her grandmother. Though my outside appearance at that age absolutely did not look like this, the girl in the painting is a 17 year old representation of what I look like today.

I placed this painting on top of the piano my mother recently gave me. It had been my grandmother's. It felt right.

You, Me, and the Moon

I had a completely different plan for this painting when I started, but as I was doing the background, figures and a moon appeared. Love when my paintings boss me around!

Bonded by our Roots

Lucky for me, just as I was starting this piece a friend dropped off an Anthropologie catalog. All those textures are so inspiring for collage! If you've got some, send them my way.

Abundance

So a funny thing happened on the way to the finish line with this painting. I was laying down the paint for the flowers and my big cat, Pug, lay down beside the painting and flopped his tail right where I'd just put some orange. He then flopped his tail up and "painted" one of our chairs and then he flopped his tail to the side and "painted" my shorts. Love collaborating creatively with you, Pug!!!

Her Choice Hung in the Balance

This is based upon Snow White and her decision whether or not to eat the apple. As I was painting her thoughts of Eve came up as well. For both of them...their choice hung in the balance.

Self Acceptance

I find that the older I get, the more accepting I am of what I used to consider imperfections...flaws. I've actually grown rather fond of them. They are the most "me" part of myself and I'm feeling more and more free to let my "me" flag fly.

This mixed media piece started with a rough sketch of my face, then journaling about how I feel about myself. Raw and personal and so wonderful to do. Art is a powerful force, my friends.

Alongside her Spirit

I love the idea of spirit animals. Mine is the opossum. Not everyone's favorite, to be sure, but I adore them and love and appreciate all of their unique super powers. As I began working on this woman I knew her spirit animal was some sort of cat. So beside her this cheetah walks...or maybe it's beside the cheetah she walks. I wonder if there's an opossum out there that considers me her spirit animal. Hope so!

This is a collage piece that I painted over and then added some texture, echoing the cheetah's spots. The textured pieces sparkle.

Goddess

When I first started this my goal was to paint the goddess, Kali. My hope is that I captured her spirit, though I chose not to paint her with her tongue out as she's often portrayed. Oh, and the gold sparkles!

Dream

When someone encourages me to be messy with my work, I jump right in...it's my favorite! I loved creating so many amazing layers, intentionally leaving the collage part that said "DREAM" to shine through. The face is based on Buddha's. And best of all, this painting actually sparkles!

Her Truth

I'm celebrating a fantastic school year that finished just a few hours ago. (In case you don't already know, I teach three and four year olds with disabilities...and I love it!) I came home after work, took a nap, and then finished this painting. I have a thing when I'm painting faces. I like to finish the eyes early on. I feel like they give me guidance in the painting process. Almost every time I end up changing the eyes significantly before the painting is finished, but with this one the eyes felt like they were speaking from such a place of truth, that they remained unchanged as the rest of the painting evolved. Love this woman for her strength.
