Behold Him

Peacocks are not only beautiful, they symbolize awakening, integrity, and incorruptibility...things many are seeking these days. They are reputed to make us feel better when we gaze upon them. In Hinduism they are symbolic of kindness, compassion, and good luck. In Asian spirituality they are symbolic of good will and kind heartedness. In Christianity they symbolize the church and the holiness that the church represents.

Note: the edges are cropped...the entire bird is part of the canvas.

Empathy Feather

I love painting feathers. When I first started on this art adventure almost five years ago, flowers and feathers were my "go to" subject. And while I'd taken a whimsical approach to many of my flowers, I hadn't gone there with feathers. Love, love, love getting my whimsy on!

Tricky Chicks

My chickens, they're jokesters.

"Gasp! She's dead!" I go through the gate with sadness filling my heart and walk over to check on my chicken who is on her side, legs splayed, eyes closed...surely dead as dead can be.

And every time they jump up and scamper off.

Who knew chickens played possum?

One of the Flock

I love feathers. For years I've picked them up and saved ones I've found laying about. I especially love the ones that are "messed up" because that tells a story of adventure. And, lucky for me, my chickens are super patient and let me endlessly pet them. I think I have a serious case of feather envy.

Now don't get me wrong. I have no urge to fly or have way-too-close encounters with neighborhood cats. But since I won't be sprouting a feather here and there, I took it upon myself to fix that problem.

My first non-floral henna...a tad shaky as the henna had thickened and I had to squeeze the cone a little harder, but it'll do. I'm one of the flock now.

Chickens do What?!?!

I swear these feathered friends of our teach us something new every day.

For instance...did you know that chickens can kill mice?  Turns out they most certainly can.

But in addition to that, did you know that chickens will eat the mice that they kill?  Again, that's a "can do" for a chicken.

And to top that all off, did you know that they eat their mice whole just as a snake would?  Well, yes, indeed.

And the cherry on top...did you know that my husband is officially a nature photographer now?  Yup, he took a delightful series of step-by-step, inch-by-inch photos of the entire eating process that he sent me via text while I was very much enjoying chicken and mouse free time with my brother's family in California.

Gotta love technology...and chickens!

Kid Love

Because we're both competitive and dorks, this is how our husband/wife texting goes.

But first, a little explanation.  I was just leaving work and I'd driven my car instead of riding my bike so I could bring some stuff home with me.  And since I had my car I agreed to pick my little guy up at the bottom of the big hill that leads to our house.

Dave:  "Sucker"  He was stalking our iPhone locations and he figured out what I was doing for the kid.

Me:  ":-P He was lucky.  He caught me just as I was leaving work.  And, yes, I'm a sucker.  But he loves me more than he loves you! :-)"

Dave:  "Yeah, but I'm making him taquitos."

Dang!  I think Dave may have just won this "kid love" round.

A Chicken Painting

I had all kinds of fabulous plans for yesterday and today when I requested them off from work about a month ago.  But sometimes plans have a mind of their own...like this time.

My little guy had a stomach bug the first part of this week.  And just in time for my days off, you guessed it, I got it.

But did I mope?  Well, yes, a bit.  Did I complain?  Well, frankly, if this were happening to your body, you would, too.  Did I make the best of it?  You bet.

Turns out both painting and chicken watching are quite doable whilst one deals with "the crud".  And just look what happens when I combine these two activities?!?!

Farrah's Feathers

OK, I'm totally going to admit something here.  Yup, when I was in junior high and high school I absolutely wanted hair like Farrah.  I never managed it as I was convinced that I'd never have hair that would be long enough to truly work it, so I just kept getting my standard long bob.  I did, however, manage to have baby feathers that I'd glued in place with copious amounts of Aqua Net.  And then a few years later I tossed in the towel, gave up, went for a mohawk and then shaved almost all of my hair.  Yeah, I throw the towel in in a big way.

Lost Focus

As I walked my dog last night, and she slowed to what I thought was to go potty, but then just kept walking and sniffing and walking and sniffing, and then she ran into a tree, it occurred to me just how much her behavior resembled all those folks who walk down the street with their eyes glued to their phones.  I wonder if they bump into trees, too.

About to be cooped up...and so excited about it!!!

So we've got chickens in our future.  I was skeptical at first.  I love animals, really I do so very much.  But chickens?  They've never seemed particularly lovable to me.  And as animals we'd be welcoming into our lives, I really wanted them to fall into the lovable category.

Now, my experience with chickens is admittedly limited.  I've eaten them, sure.  I've had a male chick in my classroom briefly (we named him "nugget" if that gives you any idea of how much of a fan I was).  I've even seen them from a bit of a distance at friends' houses.  But I just wasn't feeling the love.

Well, all that changed yesterday.  The kid and I were going into my dad's back yard when we heard some rustling.

Little guy:  "Hey, it's a chicken...in their yard!"

Me:  "What?!?!"

Little guy:  "Look, a chicken."

And, by golly, there was, indeed, a chicken!

My little guy went upstairs to let them know and I set about figuring out just what to do about this lost chicken.  I followed it around.  It followed me around.  I reach out to touch it.  It scampered off.  I got in its path.  It let me touch its back.  I was officially starting to consider liking this sweet chicken.

I decided to be very brave and put my hands on both sides of it.  Everything was OK.  I decided to lift it a few inches off the ground.  Its legs dangled and everything was OK.  I decided to hold it close to me.  It settled right into the embrace.  I was officially starting to fall in like with this sweet chicken.

I carried the chicken up to the house.  My kiddo walked out when he saw that holding the chicken was totally possible.  I handed him the chicken.  He held the chicken in a gentle hug...and then it pooped!!!  I was officially falling in love with this sweet chicken.

Jump forward a day and I'm sitting at the table and my husband and kid are designing a chicken coop for our back yard.  I'M SO EXCITED!!!!

Love Notes

Most days I have the pleasure of reading love notes to students that their parents have sweetly placed in their lunchboxes.

"Have a great day!"

"I love you so much!"

"You are wonderful!"

And the kids LOVE it!

I can't help thinking of when my kids were younger and they utterly and completely rejected my lunchbox love notes, and, quite frankly, insisted that I stop.

Of course it was when they were in middle school.  Ya, so I was late to the lunch love note writing party...perhaps now that they're in high school and college I need to give it another go.
