Whoooo's that, Mama?

And...in honor of Superb Owl Sunday!

This started as a painting in the class I'm currently taking but I wasn't grooving on the lesson so I went a different direction and ended up with these two cuties. I adore owls.

Hoooooo's There?

The fifth owl has shown up and now the painting is complete.  And I'm pretty sure these guys have some big plans up their sleeves.

Reminds me of the wide-eyed looks I got when I opened my kid's bedroom door last night.  He and several friends were all lined up on his bed, munching on popcorn, watching a "scary" movie.  And when they say a movie is scary, it's at least ten times scarier than "The Exorcist" was for me...and that was unbelievably scary!  Last night the plan was that everyone was going home after the movie to stay at their own houses.

But...when I got up this morning and peeked in his room, all of the boys were crashed out all over the place, curled up in each of their individual blankets.  Thinking that ten times scarier translated to way too scary to walk home in the dark.

The Early Bird gets the Worm

Well sorta, anyway.

Our fabulously wacky chicken, Phyllis, is the first to come running to me when I go in their part of the yard.  Today she happily sat on my lap for a long time...until she became obsessed with something.  That something was a mole on my upper arm.  She stared and stared and stared and then all of a sudden pecked at it.  It didn't hurt at all, but I must admit that after she made a few more attempts I was getting a bit nervous.

I swear that girl thought she was going for a worm that was just barely sticking its head out of a hole.  And being a chicken with mad chicken skills, she was likely to actually get it at some point.  So instead of electing for mole-ectomy I turned that sweet girl around and she promptly forgot about the worm.

And here's another wacky bird, hanging upside-down.  I don't think he got the memo that owls don't do that.  Tune in tomorrow to see if anyone else shows up!

Hoot, Hoot, Hoot, Hoot, Hoot, Cluck!

I love drawing and painting owls.  I really, really do.  But a funny thing happened.  I started inside, one owl at a time...and then I went outside...and suddenly a chicken appeared.

Clearly mind control takes place when I find myself hanging out with my chickens.

My Hallway Mural is Finished!

Yup, I finished it.

The family has been so great.  Dave thinks it's awesome.  My little guy thinks it's a bit "kiddish" and that I "should have started it a few years ago," but he also thinks it's pretty darn neat.  My big guy says, "That's really cool, mom."  And his girlfriend, the only other human girl that hangs out at my house these days says, "I love the cat.  It's my favorite part."

So there ya go!  The reviews are in.  And I'm giving myself five stars...see 'em?  They're right there at the top.

Oh, and when the light is low, the owls and stars appear to glow.  And now I think I need a black light!

Stop by any time.  The mural loves visitors.

P.S. The actual mural is more of a square shape.  My wonderful husband took a bunch of photos of its parts and seamed them together to create this image.  Thanks, Dave!!!!

Examining the Data

I have to say that I find something very interesting.  I live with three fellas and the microwave at our house is a serious disaster.  Despite the fact that we have two microwave dome covers that live on top of our microwave, the inside of our microwave looks like a gruesome scene from "Dexter"...splatters everywhere...ceiling, sides, door, circular tray...disgusting.

Now, the microwave in my classroom is used by me and the lovely woman with whom I'm lucky enough to work.  We use it each and every school day, all school year long, and on the last day of school we don't every have to clean it because it is pristine.  Note:  we do not have a microwave dome cover.

Hmmmm...I'm not quite sure what to conclude from this.

This is part of my Hallway Project.  More little friends keep showing up!

I Found the Link to my Inner Child

I found the link to my inner child.  I've found it before, but I didn't really realize it.  But this last time I saw it for what it was.  I rather like to draw with my left hand (I'm a righty) as a challenge.  I do it every once in a while just for fun.  What I realize now is that it's a total release.  It's permission to be a kid, to be utterly and completely imperfect, to do something purely for fun, to experiment without any expectations of a "good" result.  It's FABULOUS!

And it produced these super cute little guys!

So go for it!  Find the link to your inner child.  Maybe it's as close as your "other" hand.

Overactive Imagination

Yes, I've been accused of having one, 'tis true.  Actually I rather take it as a compliment.

But...when you come across an object made of porcelain and steel, an active imagination is not a plus.  You see, when I was traveling recently I found myself in the Denver airport really, really, really needing to go to the bathroom.  I'd been putting it off which is totally and completely against my "teacher on summer break" promise to myself to go ahead and "go" whenever I needed to...because summer is the only time of the year when I can.

Anyway, I picked a stall, began my business...it flushed...tried continuing my business after being startled...it flushed...tried concluding my business...it flushed...and finally stood...no flush (isn't this when it's supposed to flush?!?!).  I got myself all put back together and opened the door to the stall...and it flushed again!

I quickly looked around for hidden cameras, saw none, and head to the sink.  I looked for a handle...nope.  I waved my hands under the faucet...no water.  I rolled my eyes, left the restroom whilst digging in my purse for my hand sanitizer, and sent the equipment a parting wish that the toilet and faucet would somehow get together and share the "automatic" love.

Quitting Day

Today's the day.  Gonna give up a nasty habit.  Mind you, the kids rather enjoy this habit of mine and are not at all on team "Help Mom Quit" as they keep diving into my stash.  Dave is just annoyed by the entire thing.  So, pretty much I'm on my own...again.  Yes, again.  I've quit many, many times before...and not that I don't have faith in my quitting ability, but I'm quite sure I will have to quit again someday.

You see, today is the day that I'm quitting my gum chewing habit.  Every year or so I seem to take it up again...starting slowly with a pack purchased here and there...and then eventually I find myself buying the BIG pack at Costco.  Well, I've known for some time that the end was near, just felt it in my gut, and had a plan to quit after my last pack was finished.  And right now I'm actually chewing my last piece of gum (actually I've got two pieces jammed in my mouth...the better to make bubbles with, my dear).

So, if you see me out and about, and I've got a longing look in my eye, a sad forlorn pout on my non-chewing mouth, just come over and gently tap me on my back and let me know it'll all be just fine.

It always has been...
...until next year, that is.
