Whoooo's that, Mama?

And...in honor of Superb Owl Sunday!

This started as a painting in the class I'm currently taking but I wasn't grooving on the lesson so I went a different direction and ended up with these two cuties. I adore owls.

Secret Admirer

Continuing my Phyllis, the wonder chicken, theme...

I often see pigeons and small doves in the chicken yard. Now while they're likely there to take advantage of the plentiful feed, I have a suspicion that my girl, Phyllis, has a number of secret admirers. I mean, what's not to love? The girl is awesome!

I get it, wee little birds, I get it.

The Early Bird gets the Worm

Well sorta, anyway.

Our fabulously wacky chicken, Phyllis, is the first to come running to me when I go in their part of the yard.  Today she happily sat on my lap for a long time...until she became obsessed with something.  That something was a mole on my upper arm.  She stared and stared and stared and then all of a sudden pecked at it.  It didn't hurt at all, but I must admit that after she made a few more attempts I was getting a bit nervous.

I swear that girl thought she was going for a worm that was just barely sticking its head out of a hole.  And being a chicken with mad chicken skills, she was likely to actually get it at some point.  So instead of electing for mole-ectomy I turned that sweet girl around and she promptly forgot about the worm.

And here's another wacky bird, hanging upside-down.  I don't think he got the memo that owls don't do that.  Tune in tomorrow to see if anyone else shows up!

Hoot, Hoot, Hoot, Hoot, Hoot, Cluck!

I love drawing and painting owls.  I really, really do.  But a funny thing happened.  I started inside, one owl at a time...and then I went outside...and suddenly a chicken appeared.

Clearly mind control takes place when I find myself hanging out with my chickens.

And this is how I Ruined the World Cup

Yup, hard to manage, but somehow I did.  Innocently enough, though, I assure you.

Here's the thing.  I don't watch TV.  The only thing I know how to do with our set-up is to turn the TV off with the remote when someone in the family leaves the room with it on.  Beyond that, I'm completely ignorant of all the details and capabilities.

So here's what happened.  I was sitting at the kitchen table painting and mindlessly scanning through facebook (yes, I can do both at the same time) and all my guys kept roaring and cheering and making all sorts of other strange game-watching sounds.  One big cheer over a play erupted just as I'd read a post with a video from one of my little guy's fabulous former teachers who happened to be in Germany right at that moment.  Cars were honking like crazy and fireworks could be heard in the background.

So, thinking that the Germans in the video were also excited about the play my guys had just seen, I say, "You should see this video of folks celebrating in Germany!"

They all stopped cheering, looked at me with their jaws dropped, and then glared.

Me:  "What?!?!"

Well...apparently Dave had DVR'd the game and they were watching it just fifteen or so minutes after real time and I just totally gave away the ending.

Technology...jeepers, right?

Putting it on the Line

I have to admit that my kids are rather used to being spoiled in the laundry department.  As far as they're concerned, the laundry fairy shows up most of the time and delivers piles of neatly folded laundry.  I figured they rather dug it like that, so I was blown away when my big guy said something to me today when I was hanging some jeans on our clothesline.

Big guy:  "Are you going to start using the clothesline again?"

Me:  "Just a little.  I always lay off in the winter."

Big guy:  "Well, I like when clothes are hanging out here so I can just go outside and take what I want to wear off the line."

I really dug it...and somehow I think one of his fond childhood memories will be of his mom hanging his clothes to dry.  Pretty groovy.

Sentimental Sunday

Been having a sentimental Sunday 'round here.  With my big guy entering college and my little guy starting high school next week, as in just seven days from now, I keep thinking of the little boogers they once were...as I look up at them now towering over me...and I'm absolutely confident that they'll each be brilliant and amazing in their owns way.  I mean with a history of such deep thoughts, how could they not be?

My little guy who once inquired, "Was [big guy] zero when he came out of your privates?"

and..."Dump trucks must cuss a lot because of all the beeping sounds."

My big guy who had a great idea after receiving his glasses prescription for a weakness in only one eye, "Can I just get a unicle?"

and..."I ate a big, big, big, big booger in the bathroom!!"

I'm so excited for them!  And can't wait to hear what they say next!

Why yes, of course, this is supposed to be me and my boys.

Leaving the Nest

My big guy leaves town tomorrow...in a big way.  It's a funny thing to realize that I've never been away from him for more than just a couple of days and he's never been more than three or so hours away.  And tomorrow I'll be dropping him off to fly about five states away.  Alone!  It's OK, I suppose, he is eighteen after all.  I've been just a little freaked out emotional today...I'm sure my family didn't notice a thing.

Anyway, I had to check in with the big guy on the night before his big voyage.

Me:  "Are you ready?"

Big guy:  "No."

Me:  "I'm gonna miss you."

Big guy:  "Uh, OK."

Me:  Just sitting there looking at him with my big blinking eyes.

Big guy:  "I'm gonna miss you, too.  Now can you leave my room?"

Sigh...he's gonna miss me, too...and, yay, he'll be back in a week.
