Be an Owl

Being human is exhausting. So be an owl.

Saw that quote today...made me smile. I used to draw a version of this fella all the time years ago. So nice to see him again!

You, Me, and the Moon

I had a completely different plan for this painting when I started, but as I was doing the background, figures and a moon appeared. Love when my paintings boss me around!

Moonlight Dream

OK, it's quite possible that I'm not really that great at going all the way through to the end with multiple day challenges. I had intended to go to 15 days, but here I am at day 8 and I think this painting is finished. I considered pushing through, but I'm rather fond of this composition so I choose to stop and let it be. I'm super excited to start another. It's such fun revisiting a piece day after day.

And the price of this painting was calculated following the method established in previous posts about this challenge.

Supporting Characters

How do I know that David and I are perfect for each other?

Appliance repair guy commenting on our fridge's coils: "Your bottom looks good."

David and me: "Thank you."

Oy, you can't take us anywhere...even our own kitchen.

Today I worked on some "supporting characters" for my future whimsical paintings (as part of this class).

Moon Gaze - Part 3

I woke up the little guy this morning at the time he said he'd be getting up.

Me: "It's 7:00. I have to leave and I want to be sure you'll get up."

Little guy: "OK, mom." He leaned over and did something on his phone.

Me: "So are you getting up?"

Little guy: "It's a process mom."

"Process" clearly means several encounters with a snooze button. And so I left, hoping that he'd get up in time to get to school before the bell rang.

I'm having surgery tomorrow morning so I'll miss blogging and posting my art for the first time in over four years. I plan to be back up and running really soon.

Happily, I finished this bag for my big guy's girlfriend. Here it is shot from all sides.

Moon Gaze - Part 2

Something happened last night that makes me feel like we're doing something right. And it fits so well into this canvas bag painting I'm doing of a woman who is so at peace with her world. Last night I remembered that we needed to put our big trash bin out to the curb for this morning's garbage pick up. Dave went out to do it and came in and said, "We have no trash."

We looked in our kitchen trash can and it was not even half full. So no trash to the curb for us this week. Makes me happy.

And I continued working on this wonderful canvas bag project.

I painted the handles and much of the background blue.

I'm getting more bleeding. I'll fix that later.

I dripped on the flower...it's OK, I've already decided that I like it.

Here's the back of the bag. The back seriously
needs to have more going on. Must think of something.

I painted the first layer on the petals.

Moon Gaze - Part 1

My little guy had an a couple of his old friends (from way back in kindergarten) spend the night last night. I was telling one of them about my upcoming surgery and he said, "You'll be able to hula-hoop again!" I was pleasantly stunned. He was right! I had to quit hula-hooping when I got a blood clot four years ago, but now that the root cause of all of that will be gone, well, hula-hooping here I come!  It's the little things....

My big guy's girlfriend dropped off a canvas bag and a lovely request (I LOVE requests!). This morning I started on her bag.

I started by sketching out her idea.
This is the front.

This is the back.

I used watered down acrylics to add color.

Here's the beginnings of the moon.

Here's the back of the bag.
I'm excited to see how this bag turns out!

Feels Like Winter

I cut Hazel's hair a week or so ago. Hazel is our big awesome dog for those of you who don't know. Ever since her haircut she's been a little shivery at night as she sleeps at the foot of our bed. So being the nice doggy mom that I am, who also happened to be woken up by Hazel's quivery shivers, I got up, pulled her up to my spot, lay her head on my pillow, got myself in bed, snuggled up beside her and covered us both up.

And I must say that it was the most delightful, cuddly, shiver-free night's sleep ever!

Teddy Bear

And this happened...and it made me ever so happy.

I went shopping first thing this morning and as I was heading toward the dairy section to pick up some yogurt there was this guy. This most amazing guy. He was wearing pajamas, a T-shirt, and flip flops, and was pushing around a kid-size shopping cart. And this guy was not petite! I loved that he went shopping just the way he did.

Made me think I should bring my teddy bear shopping with me next time. Might just make someone's day like he made mine.

I Love my School

I was walking in the school where I work this morning when a child ran to me from behind and caught me in a hug. I turned around to see the most fabulous, bright, and sunshiny face looking up at me.

Me: "What do you have there?"

Kiddo: "A bunny."

Me: "What's its name?"

Kiddo: "I named it for you."

And another big hug.

BEST way to start the day!

Every year the school where I work has an amazing fundraiser. I always contribute a painting for the auction. Here is this year's. I love painting owls. Next to chickens they're my favorite animal to paint.

My Best Friend is a Big Yellow Ball

Last night our big dog, Hazel, jumped on our bed. This is her usual routine when she sees us starting to brush our teeth and don our PJs. Only this time it was different. This time she had her yellow tennis ball with her and she curled right up with it. Perhaps she's wanting to continue fetching well into her dreams. Perhaps she misses her best bud Scout.

It's nice to know that friends can come in many different forms...even spherical.

Up All Night

A couple of weeks ago a canvas was dropped off at my house. I'd been asked to create a piece of art to be part of a fundraiser for the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center. So here's what I came up with. I worked on it over about a week or so. I created the background first, and what always happens to me happened this time, too. I always, always manage to fall in love with the background. I can't even imagine painting over a single bit of it. So the background had to sit propped up on one of our chairs for about five days so I could enjoy it and fall just a bit out of love with it, enough so that I'd be willing to cover at least half of it up. But the wonderful thing is, as soon as I do cover up parts I end up loving the painting even more.

Oh, and the white polka dot stars wrap around the canvas on the edges!

This little guy and five stars and moon watching over him make me so, so happy. Hope it makes them a lot of money!

Up All Night

I'm am so not a night owl.

But the Austin allergies have forced their hand and brought out my inner night owl. Well, at least my inner sneezing-all-night owl.

I get ready for bed...I'm fine.

I fall asleep...I'm fine.

1:00 a.m. rolls around...AAAAA-CHOOOOO!

1:30...AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO!

2:00...AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO!

2:01...Dave says, "Blow your nose."

2:02...PBBBBBB! (That's the sound of my nose being blown.)

2:03...Me, "Whew, thanks."

2:30...AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO!

3:00...AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO!

4:00...AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO!

5:30..."beep, beep, beep, beep" goes my alarm.

And this sneezing-all-night owl wishes for the luxury of all day sleep that nocturnal animals are given. PBBBBBB!

Fair Weather

Conversation as we were walking to the car in the grocery story parking lot. The little guy was pushing the cart as he always insists upon doing.

Me: "I never pushed a grocery cart until I moved out of my parents' house."

Little guy: "Mom, you know you live with a bunch of control freaks."

Me: "We're going to put gas in the car next. Are you going to insist on filling it?"

Little guy: "No way."

Older and Wiser

My Bunco group had its annual Holiday party last night. When we started about fourteen years ago, we were all young moms desperately eager to get together once a month and get our crazy on. We've all grown a lot since then and I think the changes are rather lovely.

The details will remain known only to us, Bunco rules are like Vegas rules in that way, but I will say that we're older, wiser, and ever so much more awesome. We sport our gray hair and our reading glasses like the sexy mamas we are. And we are proof positive that bigger, wider, and, yes, saggier is absolutely better.

I'm madly in love with my Bunco Babes!!

Silence

This morning as I drove through our still pitch black neighborhood I spied a dog. An amazing dog. Only it wasn't an ordinary dog at all.  It was a coyote.  And it was simply magnificent.  The kid and I followed it for a bit in silent awe until it dodged up a driveway, disappeared, and we were left staring at where it had been.

I love that my kid understands the value of silence.

New Favorite Activity

It's official.  I have a new favorite activity.

1st - Go through a haunted house enough times to memorize everything and no longer be scared of anything.

2nd - Follow people through the haunted house that look like they're likely to be screamers.

3rd - Maybe, just maybe, scare them at just the right time.

Good times!

Boo!
