I must be a mermaid...

I must be a mermaid...
I have no fear of depths
and a great fear of shallow living.

Seashore Dreams

Every day I get home from work and have to clean the sand from between my toes.  It's one of the many perks of teaching young, delightful kiddos who love their sandbox.  This past summer is the first summer in forever that we didn't go to the beach or some sort of lake house or something like that,  and I must be feeling it because I actually delay my toe cleaning just a wee bit while I close my eyes and pretend I'm just getting back to my room after a day of fun in the sun.

Seashore dreamy bliss....

And this is how I Ruined the World Cup

Yup, hard to manage, but somehow I did.  Innocently enough, though, I assure you.

Here's the thing.  I don't watch TV.  The only thing I know how to do with our set-up is to turn the TV off with the remote when someone in the family leaves the room with it on.  Beyond that, I'm completely ignorant of all the details and capabilities.

So here's what happened.  I was sitting at the kitchen table painting and mindlessly scanning through facebook (yes, I can do both at the same time) and all my guys kept roaring and cheering and making all sorts of other strange game-watching sounds.  One big cheer over a play erupted just as I'd read a post with a video from one of my little guy's fabulous former teachers who happened to be in Germany right at that moment.  Cars were honking like crazy and fireworks could be heard in the background.

So, thinking that the Germans in the video were also excited about the play my guys had just seen, I say, "You should see this video of folks celebrating in Germany!"

They all stopped cheering, looked at me with their jaws dropped, and then glared.

Me:  "What?!?!"

Well...apparently Dave had DVR'd the game and they were watching it just fifteen or so minutes after real time and I just totally gave away the ending.

Technology...jeepers, right?

When I was a Fish

I've got a kid in college now.  Does he talk about it?  Nope.  Do I have any idea what his grades are?  Ya...nope.  Mums the word on all that stuff.

I suppose that's why a memory popped up for me.  When I was a freshman in college I tanked grade-wise.  I'd somehow managed to float through high school with very little effort and still ended up in the top ten percent, so actually needing to study in college took me by surprise.  Left me with an, "Oh....."

So I got to studying and managed to get myself all Dean's List worthy by Christmas.  So what did this totally broke college kid give her parents as gifts?  Little notepads made out of quartered "A" college papers.  The perfect little notepad for taking down a message by the phone.

And, by golly, as I recall, my parents used those sweet little notepads for a number of years.

Coming Soon

I came to a stop at an intersection the other night.  There was a fella there hoping to get some spare change.  Only he didn't have the cardboard sign I've become accustomed to.  And, gosh, writing that I'm "accustomed" to it makes me a little sad that it absolutely, positively doesn't strike me as odd or unusual to see yet another homeless person around.

Anyway, this fella was wearing a big, red oversize T-shirt that read "SIX PACK COMING SOON".  My first thought was, "Wow, is he just being honest?"  And then I thought, why on earth would this guy have spent his hard-earned money on that shirt.  OK, I suppose it was possible, but then I began to wonder if someone had given him that shirt...you know, as a joke.  And then I saw his smile.  His big, wonderfully goofy smile, and then I didn't care any more about how he'd gotten the shirt.  I just knew that this guy was able to find the silver lining, the happy, the whimsical in the package he was presenting.

And then I wished I'd had a dollar to give him.

Overprotective...Me?

Found out it's never too late to learn...about myself, that is.  I've got "help with homework" duty every weeknight from 5:00 - 7:00, and last night I ended up reading an article that was totally about me and my parenting style.  Most of our style these days, in fact.  I'm not one to like fitting into any sort of cliché sort of thing, particularly when it was a style that the author thought was ultimately a bit damaging, albeit widespread, but that's kind of how it went.

What was it?  It was overprotective parenting and its effects on the kiddos.  When I was a kid I was pretty much of a homebody, but I was always allowed to be out and around if I got the gumption up.  And when I did I'd disappear for hours on end.  I'd be at the creek down the hill getting filthy, being too scared to pick up crawdads, loving playing with all the frogs I found, and often not returning home until my mom went outside, stood in the street, and banged a gong until I got home.  Embarrassing much?  Uh, you bet!

My own kids got to explore creeks, too, but I was always there.  They picked up crawdads and frogs, but I'd make them wash up right quick.  They could go places, but I had to always know where they were, and once they entered sixth grade and got cell phones, I'd expect them to pick up if I called them.

I felt guilty at first after reading the homework article and went to my "go to" excuse of "well, something could have happened to them!"  And as I experienced having two men (strangers) pull up next to me as I was walking home from elementary school and demand that I get in the car with them, and I had the good sense to run as fast as I could to the nearest house and bang on the door for help, I know sometimes things do happen to kids.

So...I think I need to take my kids out this weekend, drop them off at a sweet little creek, confiscate their phones, and insist that they get covered in mud and touch and set free at least five critters each.

...oops, I think I just got controlling again.

Take the Time to See what's Below

My dog and I have been wondering about something as we go for our nightly walks.  Every time we pass a particular area, it's like the grass, weeds, and all other plant life come to life.  They shake, rustle, and move about in a curiously alarming fashion that takes us both by surprise every time...even though by now we should expect it.

Well, the other night I decided I was going to figure out exactly what was going on.  So, Hazel and I walked our normal path, heard the first hints of movement, and stopped in our tracks.  We waited for a surprisingly short amount of time and suddenly mice were everywhere!  They ran in front of us, behind us, around us, back and forth into the brush...it was AWESOME!

So now it's our routine to walk very slowly through this area taking the time to gaze as these marvelous little creatures as the emerge from and dive into their burrows, as they chew on bits of grass, and as they do what I'm quite sure is simply play.

We love 'em!
