Waiting Blissfully

I took my little guy and my niece to an ice skating rink the other day. I didn't skate because, well, basically I'm a wimp. I don't like to be cold. Ice skates make my feet hurt. And most of all, I don't like to fall on really hard surfaces (which always happens).

But those young'uns had a blast. And while they skated seemingly endless ovals, I blissfully waited, watched, and videotaped. Good times were had by all.

I drew this piece back in October when I was visiting my brother's family and I accidentally left this and one more drawing. My adorable niece found them and when they came last week they brought them. It was so much fun painting it after all this time!

Funny? Hmmmmmmm...

I'm constantly forgetting what I said.  Such is the case from last night.  I cracked what I was convinced was a really funny joke.  But my audience did not share my enthusiasm.  Decidedly did not.

Little guy:  "That's worse than a bad joke...that's a dad joke."

Wow.  That is bad.

Seeing Orange

Last night on my walk I passed the cutest fella.  He was a total ginger, hair a lovely shade of light auburn.  And he was wearing a Longhorn orange polo shirt.  And the icing on the cake?  He was walking an equally ginger Golden Retriever.

They were awesome...and I told them so.

And when I did, he looked down at his shirt and at his dog, and appeared to have had no idea that they shared the same shade.  That made them even more awesome.

Shyness and Flatulance...is there really a connection?

I was telling my kid that I admired him.  It was a short-lived feeling.

Me:  "I thought it was so cool that you wanted to go to the homecoming game, and you were fine just being dropped off there, and you totally knew you'd find friends to hang out with.  I never would've done that as a kid."

Little guy:  "Yeah, mom, you were shy.  You still are."

Me:  "You think I'm shy?  I guess so.  What makes you think I'm shy?"

Little guy:  "Well, when you fart in public and I make a huge deal of it, you get upset."

A brief pause as I took a moment to ponder.

Me:  "Um, that's not because I'm shy.  That's because you busted me for doing something publicly inappropriate."

Little guy:  "Yeah, well you're still shy."

Me:  "Unlike you, I always at least make sure they're silent."

Little guy:  "Uh, that's how you know I'm not shy."

Upholstery...the "do"s and the "don't"s

I was reminded today (you don't want to know how) of something Dave taught me many, many years ago.  So long ago that it was actually when we were dating...perhaps about twenty-three-ish years to be exact-ish.

I'm pretty sure we were in Sears and we were looking for the first of many Archie Bunker-type chairs that we'd have in our house.  We sat on them.  We leaned them back...we're all about recliners, you see.  We debated their durability.  And we considered the most important thing of all, their resistance to flatulence.

And, my friends, let me share the tidbit of wisdom my boyfriend at the time taught me.

Dave:  "Cloth upholstery absorbs fart smells.  Leather doesn't."

So...If you've ever wondered why this non-cow-eating chick swears by her family's leather couch...well, now you know.

First Day of School

I love how people look at things differently.  It was the first day of school for all of us.  Big guy, first day of college.  Little guy, first day of high school.  Me, first day of my same bat place, same bat time teaching gig that I love ever so much.  And if we're asked to say one thing about our first day of school?  Well...

Little guy:  "I ate something weird in the cafeteria."

Me:  "I had so much fun...I played with kiddos all day!"

Big guy:  "Having good teachers makes such a difference in how well you can learn."

OK, now who's the most grown-up amongst the three of us?

I dig it!

Unplugged

After an absolutely wonderful, divine, purely delicious summer break, I headed back to work today.  And it was also wonderful, divine, and purely delicious (especially the amazing breakfast tacos!!).  As with all school years I come up with goals for myself.  Typically they're about improving as a teacher, a co-worker, or some such thing.  This year?  My goal will hopefully lead to an improvement as a relaxed person, a wife, a mom...which, of course, means I'll be a better teacher, right?

Anyway, this year my goal commitment (because I really, really mean it) is to never, ever check my work email unless I'm at work.  You see, I've had this nutty habit over the years of logging in during my time, and taking care of business.  And upon looking back, I can't imagine that it helped with anything even though that's the direction my heart and intent were going.

Now, over the years I've quit many, many things that I've set out to rid myself of.  And I'm a cold turkey kind of girl.  My successes you ask?

• quit eating red meat as a fifteen-year old.
• quit smoking as a seventeen-year-old (seriously, the cost of a pack went to a dollar...no way!).
• quit biting my nails (numerous times over the years, but it's been a really long time now).
• quit chewing gum (again, numerous times, but I'm "clean" now).
• quit all caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate) last December.
• quit turning on the TV...since 2009.

So, I can do it, right?

My failures you ask?

• quit using bad words (I'd be successful if bad words weren't just the right thing on rare occasions...never at work).
• quit being snarky (my personality simply dictates that I cannot quit this one).

OK, so perhaps I only have a 50% chance of success, but this girl's gonna give being unplugged her all, people.  I'm taking my "time off" back.
