Best Friends

It's always such an honor to create a commissioned piece. I adore these two friends. Makes me think of this quote.

"Whoever said that diamonds are a girl's best friend never owned a dog."

I feel like I'm that girl...all grown up...and I even have my hair dyed bright orange right now!

Hope

"Hope is the ability to hear the melody of the future." - unknown author

"Hope"
This piece began as a quick pencil sketch, then ink over that, and then it sat for a while as I pondered what to do next. I kept feeling like I should finish her out, adding color to her entirety, but my inner voice kept saying, "Leave her be." And I did...all except for the heart as it was sending echos of a piece I did in early November ("Your heart knows the way. Run in that direction.")

Notes to my Teenage Self

I started this painting with the intention of letting go of parts of me and my life that were no longer serving me well. It quickly became a nurturing piece feeding the soul of my teenage self. I suppose letting go of things needed to start there. It's filled with words of wisdom, encouragement, and love for a seventeen year old who had just lost her grandmother. Though my outside appearance at that age absolutely did not look like this, the girl in the painting is a 17 year old representation of what I look like today.

I placed this painting on top of the piano my mother recently gave me. It had been my grandmother's. It felt right.

Balance through Connection

I've felt called to activism since the election and have been raising money for different organizations from the sales of my art. This week I found myself craving balance and compassion and the idea for this painting came to mind. All of our beautiful differences complement each other and together I really do think we can work toward balance and peace in our world.

I'm going to give a portion of the sales of this image to Girl Forward, an organization that creates amazing opportunities for refugee girls. I'll be donating $50 from the sale of this original painting and then $5 for each 12"x12" print.

Please spread the word.

Be Mindful

I began this painting a couple of days after the election. I was feeling keenly aware of the need for mindfulness...that our nation's children are looking to us to show them how they may remain positive and loving in this world. I had planned on adding many more layers but somehow she felt complete as is, her rawness making the need for our mindfulness that much more powerful.

Finding Solace Within

I felt the urge to paint something small as I've been working on a large commissioned piece...and "Finding Solace Within" kept running through my mind as I painted her.

She Wore a Flower in her Hair

I very seldom use watercolor these days, but when I do it's always such an amazing experience. This sweet one is almost all watercolor with just a touch of ink here and there. Watercolor is so deliciously ethereal. And I did it on canvas....loved that that actually worked!

Who's to Say What's Normal?

As someone who has always felt on the outskirts of normal, both in personality and appearance, this was a wonderful piece to create. With its background of chaos, the prickly barb wire that both protects and does self harm, and the attention drawn to difference...well, I get this girl.

Dani and My Billy

I was commissioned to paint a precious girl and her wonderful uncle. It is always such an honor to capture a special moment in time. I'm reminded of the photography my mom did throughout my childhood. The slogan for her business was "Memorable moments make meaningful keepsakes". I think that pretty much sums it up.

My Inner Child got the Last Word

In my last blog post I observed that I wasn't letting my wacky side (aka my inner child) get the last word. Well, I decided to let my inner child be the boss of me. I think I'll do this more often!

A Flower Child

Dave and I went out for Sushi tonight. Everything was AMAZING! What was also amazing was the brussels sprouts the guy next to me (we sat at the bar) was eating.

Me: "Those look wonderful. Where are they on the menu?"

He showed me.

Me: "Are they sweet?"

Guy: "Not really. You should try them."

Me: "Oh, no, I'll just get them next time."

Guy: "No, really, try them." And he pushed his bowl to me.

So I tried them.

"Mmmmmmmmmm!!!"

And that marked the first time I've ever tasted a stranger's food at a restaurant. I think I may need to make a habit of it!

I had some time over the weekend after I did the "Collaboration" piece with Dave so I tried another one, only this time I tried to collaborate with myself. I'd paint it as a serious artist, then I'd go all fun and wacky, then I'd go all serious again. Over and over. It was almost as much fun as painting with Dave. Almost. I think I'll likely do another one and let the fun and wacky side get the last word.
