exhausted by it all,
she risked love.

She Wore a Flower in her Hair

I very seldom use watercolor these days, but when I do it's always such an amazing experience. This sweet one is almost all watercolor with just a touch of ink here and there. Watercolor is so deliciously ethereal. And I did it on canvas....loved that that actually worked!

To the Side

Every night I tuck my chickens in. This entails going to their coop and doing a head count. And by head count I mean that I actually reach in and give all six girls a little love. And every night Fuzzy, our littlest one, refuses to face me. The trouble for her is that I still totally know she's looking right at me. Eyes-on-the-sides-of-your head problems.

Chicken love....

Lost in Thought

So I'm sitting here lost in thought at a coffee shop just wondering what I'll blog about today, when all of a sudden I notice that the amazing cinnamon roll thingie that Dave got us has the most crazy curly peaks at the tips at the top. It's kind of an odd cinnamon roll to explain, but suffice it to say that it would fit in in a mild version of a Dr. Seuss book. And then my mind wandered to the painting I did today and then all I could think about were the curly tips of the woman's hair. And the sugar and herbal tea must be getting to m because all I can think of is that my painting and the roll must have come from the same awesome alternative universe or something.

And now I know for sure that I'm not going to eat the last bite.

Fabulously Adorable

On my birthday earlier this week we went out to eat for dinner. It was fabulous family fun. But the fun was not limited to our table. Nope. Because all of a sudden a straw wrapper flew through the air and hit my kid in the neck. All four of us turned to look where it had come from and there was this fabulously adorable curly-haired chick. She caught our gaze and put her head on the table.

Me: "Don't worry about it, I've totally done the same thing before."

She raised her head and smiled in relief. And then she giggled with her equally adorable boyfriend who had obviously been the target of that errant straw wrapper.

Young love...as delicious as the enchiladas I ate that night.

Being Brave

I was brave today.

Not in the risk my life way or anything like that. No, I was brave in a hair way. The thing is this. I have tons of hair clips and barrettes. And I consistently put them in my hair in the morning. But I always, always, take them out before I manage to actually be seen by anyone outside of my family. Maybe I prefer to hide behind my hair. Perhaps I don't want anyone to know just how big my forefivehead is (big foreheads run in my family). Perhaps it a remnant from my punk days in high school.

Well today I put a clip in my hair and I left it in. All. Day. Long. Feeling like a superhero...and my fivehead appreciated the opportunity to see the sun!

Hair

I have wacky hair. There's really nothing I can do about it...or at least nothing I'm willing to do about it. But every once in a while someone says something charitable.

As I entered the YMCA...

Nice counter guy: "Look at you coming to the gym with your hair looking great."

Me (after looking behind me to see who he was actually talking to): "Um, thanks. Just wait till I'm done working out, then it'll look really great."

After I'd been working out for about half an hour...

Nice counter guy who was now a nice floor guy: "Your hair still looks great!"

Me: "Thanks, you're sweet."

I'm pretty sure he was fulfilling a personal challenge to say something nice to a bunch of strangers that day, but it was super nice of him anyway.

Same as it Ever Was

I was at the store the other day.

Cutie checker lady: "I love your hair!"

Me: "Oh, thanks. I just roll out of bed and settle for whatever it decides to do that day."

Adorable bagger dude: "I've had the same haircut since I was a kid."

And I absolutely believe him! He had the cutest little boy haircut on a man EVER!

Same as it ever was awesomeness....

Medusa and the Mermaid

The other day it was super windy, and my hair, that is hardly what one would call tame, was doing its very best Medusa impression...and it was doing a fantastic job of it, I must say. I walked into the gym and the guy by the card reader said, "I like your hair."

Me: "Um, thanks." And I did my best to tamp it down just a tad. And then it sprang right back.

I did my weights, I did my cardio, I did my ab work, and then I went into the bathroom to do my, well, you know. When I went to wash my hands a woman went to the other sink. Her hair was the most amazing turquoise blue and the most spectacular brilliant green. I was standing next to what surely must've been a mermaid who'd gained her legs.

Me: "I like your hair."

Awesome walking mermaid chick: "Thanks!"

Medusa and the mermaid...fabulous!

Fliptastic

Yup, that's my little guy. What with doing karate and being on the high school wrestling team, that kid is freakishly fliptastic. Now, mind you, by "fliptastic" I don't mean that he's doing flips all about the house. Nope, the kid finds every opportunity to attempt to flip anyone smaller than he is in the house...which leaves only me. I, however, am not fliptastic. And by "not fliptastic" I mean that when he tries to flip me I pull his leg hairs, I tell him that I'll never make him sandwiches again, I scream and shout.

And while I'm quite sure that the flipping attempts will continue to occur, I'm also quite sure that I'll continue to foil said attempts.

Waiting Blissfully

I took my little guy and my niece to an ice skating rink the other day. I didn't skate because, well, basically I'm a wimp. I don't like to be cold. Ice skates make my feet hurt. And most of all, I don't like to fall on really hard surfaces (which always happens).

But those young'uns had a blast. And while they skated seemingly endless ovals, I blissfully waited, watched, and videotaped. Good times were had by all.

I drew this piece back in October when I was visiting my brother's family and I accidentally left this and one more drawing. My adorable niece found them and when they came last week they brought them. It was so much fun painting it after all this time!

Crazy Hair

And sometimes we reverse our roles.

Me:  "Man, I've got crazy hair today."

Little guy:  "You should try brushing your hair every once in a while."

Me:  "I don't like to brush my hair."

Some Like it Hot

I've always prided myself on my ability to eat the heat.  I love spicy foods...I really, really do.  At one sitting I'll easily consume one third to a half a jar of pickled jalepeños and not break a sweat or be bothered in any way.

So tonight when I took my kid to a sandwich shop I asked for jalepeños on my sub.  And out came a whole pickled jalepeño which the sub technician sliced open, squeezed all the juice on my sub, and then sliced it up and put all the jalepeño meat and the seeds on my sandwich.

Well, I ate that sucker, and I LOVED that sucker, and I was on FIRE!

And I really, really enjoyed it.

Adorkable

You know when you're being goofy because it's pretty much the only way you know how to be?  Well, my husband came up with a new term for that...and he used it on me.

"Adorkable"

Yup, a perfect "adorable" and "dork" combo plate.

Good to know at forty-six that I'm still darn adorkable.

I Done Got Hip Checked

I got hip checked today.

Little guy:  "Hey mom, have you heard this song before?"

Me:  "No.  I like it."

Little guy:  "Here, I'll play you some more of their songs."

Me:  "You're the reason I'm so hip.  You keep me current."

Little guy:  "You're not hip. And don't say 'hip'."

..and I suppose his honesty would hurt if it were the slightest bit true.  Good thing it's so totally not!

Splitting Hairs

So I got my hair cut today.  Not just a little cut, mind you.  Nope, I'm talking four or five inches worth.  Noticeable, right?  Well, amazingly enough, the kid did notice.  Almost immediately.  And then he suckered me into a hug during which he slipped his freezing cold hands up under my shirt and onto my back.  All points for noticing my haircut were lost at that very moment.

But up to this point no one else has noticed the dramatic decrease in head covering I now present with.  I'm going to just assume that it's because when they look at me they only see my pure love and beauty shining through...and it must be so bright that it's blinding.

Yup, that's the theory I'm sticking with.

In Need of Support

So my little guy went out in drag for Halloween this year.  And while he got to have the delightful freedom that a skirt allows, he also go to experience an issue that is not so delightful.

Little guy:  "That bra you had me wearing didn't hold these up."  He held up the roller derby socks I'd "enhanced" him with.

Me:  "Not enough support, eh?"

Little guy:  Yeah, they kept popping out."

Me:  "Yup, it happens."

Super mom here...doing my part to bring up a man with empathy.
