Worth Stopping For

I was just looking out my window and a fella was riding his bike by one of my neighbor's houses. He stopped his bike, got off, walked to one of their lovely rose bushes, and took a deep sniff.

He has the right idea, my friends.

Oh, and much gratitude to my neighbors for creating such beauty!

Something New...Something Blue

I love trying new things, I really do, but something I just did for the first time ever is not working out so well for me.

You see, I managed to bite my tongue in what appears to be the absolute, perfect way to bruise it good and plenty. While I've bruised pretty much everything else at one time or another (I tend to walk into things a lot), who knew that it was even possible to bruise a tongue?

Anyway, I'll be distracted by this whole event for a while...I figure my entire sense of reality has undergone a shift.

The Super Duper Never-Ending Hug

I feel pretty darn lucky that my kids, at fifteen and nineteen, are still super snuggly.  While a lot of hugs are motivated by their wanting me to cook something or to prove HOW MUCH BIGGER they are than their wee little mom, sometimes hugs are purely about love.

Or so I thought last night until the hug went on just a little too long (not that I'm complaining).

Me:  "Are you playing a video game while you're hugging me?"

Little guy:  "Yup."

And that hug kept going and going.  Bliss...

Out of Place

I woke up the other day and was absolutely convinced that we'd been robbed.  So much was out of place.  Chairs across the room from where they belong.  Coffee table near the window instead of the couch.  Couch pulled out from the wall.  Gadzooks!

So I commenced checking on my stuff.  Laptop in its spot.  Hard drives still neatly tucked in their cubbies.  My art still in all of its artful spots.  Check, check, check!

Hmmmmmmm...what the heck happened here last night?!?!

And then I went to toss something in the trash and the mystery was solved.  Atop the myriad of nonrecyclables were the shattered remains of what must have been a large dinner plate.

Thankful we weren't robbed.

Thankful for a kid who took the time to clean up his mess.

And thinking we need to have a talk about finishing what one starts...so that mommy doesn't get all scared and stuff.

One of the Kids

I went to the gym today.  They have a really cool double waterslide, tube on one side, open top on the other.  I'm a tube girl.

After I worked out I put my swimsuit on, went outside, claimed a chaise, and lay down.  I've been very gradually working on correcting my funny school year tan...basically I'm tan only on the top of my chest in a scoop neck shape.  So I set my timer and did a brief "bake" on each side and then head over to the waterslides.  Up, up, up the stairs I went till I reached the top platform where I stood waiting with about a dozen kids under the age of ten.  I felt like an amazon towering over them and when my turn came this chick, four times older than all of her peers, blissfully and quite speedily slid down and...SPLASH!

And then I raced back up to do it again and again.  Love!!

Chicken Run

So it turns out that chickens are really, really fast.

Let me just pause here for a second to let you know that now that we have chickens...in addition to dogs and cats...I think you should all be prepared to hear a lot of chicken stories.

Anyway, we're new to chickens so this is all a crash course for us.  Dave and I were pulling out the food and water dispensers to refill them and out ran one little chicken.  And by run, I pretty much mean like greased lightning.

And I tell you what, that little chicken ran like a little maniac around our back yard, through the fence to the neighbors yard, back through the fence to our back yard, then out the fence to the front yard, then back in our back yard, and when Dave opened up the door to the coop that little chicken scurried right on in.

Whew!

And then we got the chicken wire out and put it all along the bottom of our chain link fence.  We're fast learners on this chicken crash course.

Pet Love

We're pretty crazy about our pets.  Not in that spoil-them-rotten kind of way.  No.  In that they are such an integral part of our family that we cannot imagine not sharing all aspects of our lives with them.  Now I knew Dave and I were both this way, but tonight I found out that it's not just us.

Little guy:  "When you guys move away, Hazel's mine."  (Hazel is our HUGE, 85 pounds of love, dog.)

Me:  "I don't think so."

Little guy:  "Yup."

Me:  "But by then she'll be an old lady dog who pees herself."

Little guy:  "She'll be my old lady dog who pees herself."

That's love.

Wonderful Way to Start the Day

What makes a great start to my day?

Texts and a phone call from the district saying that we have a two hour delay for the start of school today.  I dunno why...there's absolutely no precipitation.  But thank you very much!

Then our kitten walks up the length of my body all the way to my face, reaches out, and gently taps me on the nose with his paw.

I swear he's a tiny fairy and he put a little spell on me to go back to sleep.

Bliss...Zzzzzzzzzz....
