Fun Trio

I love to use canvases or pieces of wood as paint pallets. This one has a lot of messy layers on it and recently it just seemed ready to be something more. Enter simple messy flowers. Fun!

"Surrounded by Sparkles" Part 3

I've been celebrating my crazy wonderful little guy. On Saturday he let me know that he simply had to have some holiday pajamas. So off to Target we went and found him elf PJs. He wore them all that day (including to two parties), and then he wore them to school Monday and today. I can only hope and assume that he'll wear them the remainder of the week, too.

Way to bring some levity to finals week, kiddo!!!

I finished this little painting. I love its sweetness.

"Surrounded by Sparkles"

I gave her a neckline.
I added arms and a flower.
I also painted the stars yellow.

I painted the stem and leaves green,
the center of the flower yellow,
and her arms a flesh tone.

"Surrounded by Sparkles" Part 2

We got a new refrigerator yesterday. It turns out that when the ice cream won't stay frozen it's an emergency situation. So yesterday Dave went to get us a new one. And after taking the doors off of our old one so we could get it out of the house reinstalling the doors so we could give it away...and taking the doors off of the new one so we could get it into the house and reinstalling them once it was in place...it was time to dash off to a party.

A couple hours later we were missing our new fridge so much that we had to head home to hang out with it.

I continued working on this little whimsical painting.

I sketched out the basic features of her face.

I gave her shoes and painted the outlines
of the features of her face.

I gave her rosy cheeks and painted her lips.

I gave her green eyes and highlights on her shoes.

"Surrounded by Sparkles" Part 1

Had my own "cat on a hot tin roof" experience yesterday...well, maybe more like "cat on a warm steel roof". I was getting in my car to head to the gym and my goofy cat, Tommy, was lounging on top of my car. I gave him a little scratch, got in, and started backing out. When I didn't notice him jumping off by the time I got to the end of our driveway I got out to check. And there he was, still lounging. So I plucked that precious little guy off of the roof, gave him some sweet snuggles, and set him in the grass.

As I drove away I realized that I had likely just totally reinforced his "cat on a warm steel roof" behavior. Sigh.....

I started working on a tiny whimsical piece. I love using small canvases as paint palettes when I'm working on larger canvases. Then after they're thoroughly covered in paint I use them as wild and wonderful backgrounds to small paintings. That's what this is.

I sketched my figure on one of my
small palette canvases.

I painted white on the figure and some stars.

I changed my mind about the body shape
and went with a dress shape.

I began adding some color.

Floral Palette

I've always heard the saying "watching paint dry" in reference to slow, s-l-o-w things. I hadn't really thought about it until today when I painted over a canvas my mom had gotten a while back when she'd intended to do the very same thing. I painted it several hours ago and it's still not dry enough to allow me to start sketching my next project. And let me assure you, watching it has not sped it up one little bit. Guess it's like the whole "a watched pot never comes to a boil" thing. Eesh! But not one to just sit around I took advantage of the time and worked on my secret commissioned piece and completed this little floral piece.

I absolutely love using small canvases as paint palettes! The most wonderful backgrounds with tons of texture are formed and it's so much fun creating something with them. With this one I used india ink to draw a flower on top of the lovely colorful background.

I'm doing a give-away with this painting. Comment below, on my Facebook art page, on my DailyPaintworks gallery, or on my twitter post and Monday evening I'll get my little guy to draw a winner.

And it doesn't need to be hung, it can just sit pretty
on its own. Here it is on my kitchen window sill...

Celebrate!

Today my little guy tucked our cat, Tommy, into bed. You know, head on pillow, covers pulled up to his chin. And that cat fell right asleep and stayed asleep for several hours. Further proof that our cats are utterly and completely spoiled rotten. Perhaps this is why they consistently bring us dead rats. Feline gratitude is a very odd disgusting thing.

I love using small canvases as palettes. After I've used them for a while I think they make the most wonderful backgrounds for my paintings. Here's one I created today.

To Infinity and Beyond

We love rockets! My little guy and his grandpa (my dad) have been building rockets for the past three years. They started with little ones no more than a foot tall and worked their way up to a big daddy rocket that is over ten feet tall. Since we love rockets so much, my dad likes to have some small rockets around so that the little kids can fly them, too. We print them out, cut on all sorts of dotted lines, glue them together, insert a motor and 3-2-1-BLASTOFF!

Recently he asked me to design the artwork for these special little rockets that are called qubits and I finally got around to doing it. You know how I love to use canvases as paint palettes, right? Well, this is an example of what I create using one of my palette canvases. My apologies for not taking any photos of my process...I spaced. (See what I did there?)

Rainbow Palette

What happens when my brother and his beautiful family visit? Well, among the many, many other wonderful things I now have a refrigerator full of the most spectacular kiddo art. And the cherry on top is that my niece and I share the love of the same palette. I think we should have a show together sometime!

Undercover

I've been surrounded by the common cold lately. The kids have had it and Dave has had it. So far, I've managed to avoid the cooties. My secret? Wash my hands about a thousand times a day and sleep completely under the covers.

Little guy: "Better not dutch over yourself, mom."

Sweet Inspiration

I've been actively weaning my kids of the "mom will prepare all of my snacks and meals" problem they both seem to have.

Kid: "Mom, I'm hungry."

Me: "Nope."

Kid: "Mom, will you make me a...."

Me: "Nope."

Kid: "Mom, do we have any dessert?"

Me: "Nope."

And the next thing I know my little guy baking a cake, icing it, and declaring it his dad's birthday cake (a day late, but way ahead of any plans I had hatched).

Nice to know this particular problem has a cure!

Skyline

There's so much new construction in this city of ours. Dave will take a picture of downtown and it's littered with cranes here and there...and then he'll take another one a month later and the skyline has changed with the addition of buildings. And bringing it right close to home, a house was torn down two doors away and a new house is being constructed and then on the other side of us a house is about to be torn down and two are going to built where it now sits.

About twelve years or so ago this would have thrilled my little guy to no end. He LOVED construction and everything about it.

He even named us construction truck names!

Yup, yours truly was "Mommy Dump Truck".

Dave was "Daddy Crane".

Big guy was "Backhoe".

And the little guy named himself "Bulldozer". It suited him perfectly.

A Following

It's the most delightful thing. Every day I go outside with our chickens, and every day they tag along right behind me. Now I know they're ever so hopeful that I'm about to spread yummies all about. A good guess as I do do that sometimes. But I still like to pretend that it's just that they love me so and want to be wherever I am. Love my feathered ladies!

And this painting is inspired by Joan Miró. I'm taking another online painting class, one that I'd registered for before I was incredibly lucky enough to have won that last online class. I'm super excited to keep learning and being challenged.
