For All of Us

For you, for me, for my students, for all of us.

I've had the privilege of working with many children over the years. While they each have a disability, what shines through are their truly phenomenal super powers. And at the end of every school day I'm quite certain that they've managed to teach me more than I've taught them.

Words Matter

Words have the power to build up or tear down. They can crush a dream or open the remotest of possibilities. They warrant great care and intention.

I had a give-away of this painting over the weekend. I love to give my art away!

Here's what I posted on my facebook page...and then I randomly drew a name of someone who commented:

Celebration give-away!!!

I'm feeling so fortunate to be at a point in my life where I have amazing and incredibly fulfilling friendships. A few days ago I found myself reflecting on periods of my life when this was not the case...so, so, so not the case. Thinking of those times is the gift of wonderful perspective.
I started this piece by writing words that represent a beautiful life (and, yes, "messy" is included...how can we possibly learn if life is never messy, right?). Then I did splashes of color and a quick sketch. This is a big piece on 30"x22.5" on watercolor paper and I've titled it "Words Matter".

Paths Connected

Looking at this piece I thought of a dear friend of mine. I just put it in an envelope and this morning it will begin its journey her way. I'm so grateful that our paths connected many years ago. What a wonderful gift friendship is.

This was sketched with my eyes closed and then later I added some thickness to some lines and then I added watercolor.

He's Driven by My Distraction

My husband is right.  He's funny...downright hilarious.  OK, so admittedly I was pretty darn distracted with something all afternoon and into the evening.  I was nose to the grindstone and paying everyone else no mind.

So after some gentle nagging to stop, I tore myself away from my task and joined the family.

Me:  "OK, but now I need you guys to do something funny so I can blog right quick."

Dave:  "I am funny, you just haven't been paying attention."

So I did a little rewind in my brain.  And yes, the dude is correct.  Here's what my delightful husband was up to whilst I was"away."

• Dave danced for the dogs.  Yes, for them, not with them.  And they were scared!

• Dave poked and prodded me in a super flirtatious, not at all annoying, way.

• Dave approached me with random "What are you doing?" "What's that?!?!"

• And then he offered me a piece of meaty pizza.

...which meant he was willing to try anything to get my attention.  And that he's really, really funny...even funnier than he thinks he is.

If we're thinking of being thankful, my guy is at the top of my list.

"In a Minute" is Subjective at Best

I've finally figured out why my little guy seems to think that "In a minute" actually means, well, up to an hour...at least!

You know how when you're a kid time seems to take for-e-ver.  It's an eternity to do a three-minute empty the dishwasher job.  It takes a million years for the school year to go by.  And the time between birthdays, Christmases, whatever is somewhere in the gazillions of hours/days/years.

So, I suppose it's no wonder that this is how our daily conversation seems to go.

Me:  "Do you have any homework?"

Little guy:  "I dunno."

Me:  "When will you know?"

Little guy:  "In a minute."

Me:  "As in sixty seconds?"

Little guy:  "I dunno, probably longer."

And he makes no move to move an inch...for at least the fifteen minutes until I got around to writing this.

I think if I'm patient and wait a thousand years he'll get over it.  But for now, I think I'm gonna go give him a "minute" long hug.
