Inspiration

Every once in a while I find myself on the receiving end of the absolute best compliment. "You inspire me." What an incredible honor it is to be told such a thing. It made me think about all those things that this wonderful art life means to me and I scribed a few...and then added some whimsical flowers on top.

Graffiti Wall Bliss

I encourage everyone to have a graffiti space in their house. After all, you never know when you're going to get the urge to draw a bunch of flowers on your wall. So if you own your own home, have a really cool landlord, or even if you hang paper all over the wall, give it a go!

Through September 15, I will be donating 50% of all of my original art sales to the those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Here is the link to my online gallery.

Click on "Available" to see my available work. If you're in Austin leave a comment if you'd like to purchase something...there's no need for you to pay the shipping costs if you can pick it up at my place. Thank you for supporting my fundraising efforts!!!

Finding my Bliss

I confess, this one was selfie inspired. I printed the photo I took, adhered it to my canvas, let it dry, then rewet it and took off all the paper...just the ink was left behind. Then I went all fun, wild, and graffiti crazy. Such a blast!

Bliss

I've got that exhaustion, that blissful exhaustion that you get when you're doing something you love. I've been putting tons of time and energy into getting ready for my WEST show...figuring out which paintings to hang and how and where to do it, pricing pieces I hope to find new amazing homes for, deciding what cookies to buy for folks who stop by. You know stuff like that! And I'm so happily in the land of bliss.

I hope you'll stop by!!!

Balance

I find the older I get, the less of it I seem to have.

The kiddo and I were at the gym again today and after he'd had me do a crazy challenging upper body workout, he wanted me to work on my core...and my arms a tad more...just for fun.

He wanted me to stand on this upside down half sphere thingie while doing arm work with dumbbells. Well, I could not manage to get on that thing no matter how hard I tried. So the kid gave me his shoulder and after a couple of tries I was able to stand on it as it wobbled fiercely. And then he handed me the dumbbells. I teetered. I tottered. But somehow I managed stay on board.

Little guy: "You did great, mom."

I love that kid!

Graffiti Love

I love graffiti. Not the mean spirited or the "I own this so I'm marking this" kind, but the kind communicating beauty, sadness, love, bliss, remorse, joy....

There are a number of places in Austin where graffiti is gifted and then after some time it's covered, sometimes by the city, sometimes by other graffiti artists, sometimes just by the elements of life itself. These are amazing living walls of reflection and sharing.

In the next few weeks I will dedicate a wall or door in my house to take on such a life.

Like a Little Girl

Things don't usually make me scream.  I can usually take it.  Snakes, bugs, whatever.  But today I screamed...twice.  And I'm convinced that it's because "they" had the element of surprise.

The thing is, Dave's been replacing all the exterior walls of our backyard shed.  The old wood had rotted and critters were taking over.

So my job was to go through a box of books that had been sitting in the shed for many years.  They were obviously destroyed, but there was no evidence of who the destroyers had been until...

TWO COCKROACHES RAN OVER THE TOP OF MY HAND!!!
(That would be scream number one.)

My next job was clearing off a shelf that had a bunch of Dave's old glider stuff on it.  I picked up a tube of wrapped something, managed to tip it a bit...

AND A TON OF BIG ANTS AND LARVAE FELL OUT OF THE TUBE...AND LANDED ON MY SANDALED FOOT!!!
(That would be scream number two.)

...and now I'm not sure if I'll be able to sleep tonight.

Eclipsing the Moon

Of all the heavenly bodies, our moon is most definitely my favorite.  As a child I was convinced that the moon followed me.  As a young adult I was quite sure it could sense my every thought as I gazed upon it.  These days I'm pretty darn sure that both are true.

And maybe, just maybe she'll call to me in the wee hours to take in her majesty in tonight.

I'm Making Dorky Cool

I've been reunited...with my bike!  And I'm so, so, so happy!

You see, I live at the top of a hill and pretty much everywhere I need to go on my bike (aside from work) requires that I ride down a fairly steep hill.  My bike, which is a fairly old cruiser with no bells and whistles.  It's stripped down, no reflectors, no gears, no kickstand, only rear brakes...and that is all.  And I LOVE IT!  Well, I loved it until a couple of years ago, that is.  Somehow the awareness of my mortality kicked up a notch, just as it has been doing bit by bit since I hit my thirties.  Anyway, blazing down those steep hills with only a rear brake that worked-ish was getting to me.  I found myself making plans for if/when the cable snapped or some other such failure thing occurred.  My plan?  Well, do the Flinstone's version of braking of course.  Yup, I'd be draggin' my feet, and hopin' and prayin' I'd come to a stop before I hit the busy street.  My other plan?  Slam into the curb at my right and flip over my bike and land in the rocky/thistley terrain.

So I worked with that plan for a while and then I came to the conclusion that, hey, I could resolve this whole issue if I just took my bike to a shop and got a front break.  Tah-da!  Problem solved, right?  I loaded my bike in Dave's car and headed to the bike shop.

Me:  "I want to get a front brake put on my bike because I have to go down steep hills a lot and I feel nervous about depending on just my back brake."

Bike service guy:  "You don't want to do that to this bike.  It won't look cool."

Me:  "Oh."

And I left the shop.  And I stopped riding my bike...completely...except for riding to work as no hills are involved.  And my heart was a little broken.

Two years later.  Yesterday I found myself gazing at my bike and longing to go on the long rides we used to love sharing with each other.  Need I remind you that I'm pretty much in love with my bike?  So, my big guy was willing to take me and my bike in his car to the bike shop...a different one.

Me:  "I want to get a front brake put on my bike because I have to go down steep hills a lot and I feel nervous about depending on just my back brake.  I know it won't look cool, but I just want to feel safe."

Bike service guy:  "Oh, sure.  It's a great old bike.  Let me show you what we have."

Me:  "Oh, yay!"

And just a few hours later I got a call that my bike was ready.  Dave and I went to get it...and my bike, she looked lovely, amazing, and decidedly cool.

And this morning I got up bright and early and my bike and I went for one of our long and day dreamy rides.  Bliss!

This is what I looked like when I was riding my bike...only my eyes were open...and I was wearing a helmet...and all my crazy hair was tied back...and there were only flowers on the ground.  OK, maybe this is just how I felt when I was riding my bike.
