Make it Happen

My first painting of the year is filled with my thoughts and plans: be brave, yes, joy, bliss, love, confidence, embrace your superpowers, fabulous, creativity, cheer, peace, happy, gratitude, create, make it happen....

Welcoming

My kid, he's so creative.

Little guy: "Make me food." Seriously, I did teach him how to ask nicely when he was a really little guy.

Me: "Make your own food." I put my earbuds in and continued listening to a podcast I'd started earlier.

Well, that little guy of mine picked up my phone and basically lead me by my earbud cable "leash" to the refrigerator.

He gets points for creativity, but I have to say that he bombed on the mom making him something to eat part and he went ahead and nuked himself some queso.

This painting is part of the class I'm taking. The dragonfly (or maybe it's a butterfly, you decide) is leaving behind things/feelings/etc. that I'm letting go of and the sun is filled with what I want 2016 to be welcoming in. Most of the writing is illegible. That's by design.

I love doing zentangles, though I rarely do them. Such a wonderful process, all of it!

This painting is part of a year-long online art class (instructor Tamara LaPorte).

Supporting Characters

How do I know that David and I are perfect for each other?

Appliance repair guy commenting on our fridge's coils: "Your bottom looks good."

David and me: "Thank you."

Oy, you can't take us anywhere...even our own kitchen.

Today I worked on some "supporting characters" for my future whimsical paintings (as part of this class).

Feels Like Winter

I cut Hazel's hair a week or so ago. Hazel is our big awesome dog for those of you who don't know. Ever since her haircut she's been a little shivery at night as she sleeps at the foot of our bed. So being the nice doggy mom that I am, who also happened to be woken up by Hazel's quivery shivers, I got up, pulled her up to my spot, lay her head on my pillow, got myself in bed, snuggled up beside her and covered us both up.

And I must say that it was the most delightful, cuddly, shiver-free night's sleep ever!

Space, the Final Frontier

Know how you know your sixteen-year-old kid has the most awesome friends possible in this universe of ours?

Well, you go outside and find a sock that their friend accidentally dropped in the driveway when he was leaving. And is it a tube sock with stripes? No. Is it a thick wool wintry sock? Nah, too practical. Is it an argyle sock? Nope, though that would be cool, too.

No, it's the most awesome Spock sock ever.  Yes, Spock sock. The sock...it looks like Spock, pointy ears and all. And that is awesome...and so is that kid.

Live long and prosper, people!

Our Sunflower

My husband, David, is an amazing photographer.  And you know I love to paint.  Well, after years of each following our own artful bliss, we finally did a piece together.

David has taken some amazing photographs (see his work here) and a few of them he's been transferring onto wood.  He has to print the picture on paper, adhere it to the wood, then get the paper bits off while leaving the image behind.  I don't know the technicalities, but that's the basics.  He'd had one such piece hanging beside his desk for a while now and out of the blue he asked me if I'd like to add to it with paint.

Um, yes!!!  Lemme at it!

So I'm not sure if I made it awesome or if I totally ruined it, but either way I had a blast doing it.  What fun it was to create a collaborative piece!!!

Officially "Vintage"

Spent a lovely day celebrating birthdays with my mom today.  We ate good grub and then we went shopping at a vintage store.  I went through rack after rack finding tons of amazing things that were way too high maintenance for little old me (i.e. required dry cleaning and/or ironing), but happily, I did find a few must-haves.  At one point we were chatting it up with one of the owners and she mentioned that they're getting stuff from the 80s and earlier because they are a "vintage" store, after all.

Um...80s, eh?  So the clothes I wore in high school are now considered "vintage"?  What?  And then I looked at my mom and thought, "No, clothes from when she was in high school are 'vintage'.  That's how it's always been."  But I kept my pursed "vintage" mouth shut and figured that, hey, I've got some stuff in my closet that's officially worth something.

Home Sweet Home

Rituals have changed in our house over the years.  When our kids were little we were all about making sure Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny did their part in the eyes of our kiddos.  We'd stay up late, wake up early, and live in a state of exhaustion that was totally well worth it.  Over the years we've pared things back a bit.  The Tooth Fairy...well, she pretty much left he scene on her own as all those delightfully large adult teeth grew in.  But Santa and the Easter Bunny...they have been cling-ons.  Course now they don't cause us any lost sleep, thankfully.

So this morning I was out walking our dog at about 8:30.  I passed a house with little ones enthusiastically hunting for eggs in their yard.  "How adorable," I thought as I continued walking and thinking about how cute my kids had been with their own little Easter baskets and bunny ear headbands.

"My kids!!!!"  Yup, I'd forgotten to do my Easter Bunny job before I'd left. I think I'm taking this "paring things back" a little too seriously.

World Travelin'

Costco style, that is.

After I worked out at the gym today I hit the Costco because we were out of everything.  Figuring there'd be no samples available, or at least none that I could eat with my finicky diet, I scarfed a couple dried pineapple slices from a bag I keep in my car for just such emergencies, and head in.

Well, I tell you what...I had the best Costco sample day ever!

Stuffed grape leaves, the most delicious lentil soup, hummus, and dried mango.  I was in Kali appetite heaven.

And now that I think about it, I didn't buy one thing I sampled.  Ya, I have no explanation for that.

Quick Learner

I'm constantly learning lessons.  And they're nearly always because I've made a mistake.  But, hey, I rarely make the exact same mistake twice.

What was my mistake this time?   Well, as part of the little guy and my volunteer work, I end up with a big bag of bird nesting material in my car every week.  (We do weekly work at a Purple Martin Sanctuary, and one of our duties is to clear out sparrow nests so that the Martins may have their designated spots.)  Anyway, we did our work Sunday morning and I put the bag of nesting material...with a generous coating of bird poo on everything...in my back seat.  Last night the kid and I went shopping and we wondered what the heck was off about the way my car was smelling.  This morning I opened the back seat of my car to put my backpack in and WHOOOOOSH!!!  I got hit in the face with some serious nasty.

Will I be accidentally leaving a bag-o-bird stuff in my car again?  Decidedly unlikely.

Feelin' the Love

I get hugged by my kids.  A lot.  And I mean A LOT!

Sometimes it's clearly to avoid doing something.

Me:  "Do your homework!"

Kid:  "Come on mom...hug!"

Sometimes it's because they want something.

Me:  "This doesn't feel like a 'love' hug."

Kid:  "Sammich?"

And sometimes it really is pure love.

Me:  "Gosh, you've been hugging on me for about fifteen minutes.  I never hugged on my parents when I was a teenager."

Kid:  "Yeah, but I have a great relationship with my parents."

Oh, my gosh...come here kid, mama's got a big hug for you!

He's a Basket Case

The new found freedom our kitten is experiencing is rocking his world...the back yard world that is.  Our kitten has been outside lately...a lot.  He loves it so much that if we walk out there he darts away because he just knows we're going to make him go back inside.  But we don't.  And he stays and he plays and our fingers and toes are double crossed that he pees and poos.

And after all his adventures when he finds himself tired, thirsty, and exhausted, he finally wants in.

Does he come in and tell us all about his adventures?  No.
Does he want to follow us around to see what we're up to?  No.
Does he start up a game of tag with the dogs?  No.

Nope, he jumps up on the kitchen table (bad kitty), crawls into our basket of cloth napkins (bad kitty), and promptly falls asleep for a couple of hours (cutest kitty ever!)

Giving Rocks!

Earlier this month I committed to create something special for a number of people who in return also committed to create something special for a number of people...and on, and on.

Today I worked on three of my special somethings.  And it was so awesome!  I think it is the coolest thing that creating something purely as a gift is not only a pleasure, it is fun and easy.  The art just flowed.  It pretty much just jumped onto the canvas.

Continued mind, body, soul confirmation that giving rocks.

Toilet Lid Up or Down?

Our kitten loves the toilet.  By "love" I mean that he grooves on it as a source of water, he plays with it with his paws, and he occasionally slips all the way in and takes a very brief bath.  Very.  He's seriously convinced that it was placed there just for him.  It's disgusting.

Now we humans in the house have a new rule as a result of all this.  Always flush the toilet.  Always put the lid down.  These rules, as the only female human in the house, make me very, very happy.

While we've proven ourselves to be fairly abiding of the flush rule, there's definitely some failures on the lid down rule.

So this scene happens...a lot...and not just to me.

• Go in to the bathroom.
• Sit on toilet.
• Do business.
• Stand up.
• And only then realize that the seat was wet.

What is it about standing that activates our moisture sensor while sitting does not?

continued...
• We remember to put the seat down.

Eleven Scariest Words Ever!

I went to bed last night, snuggled under the covers, my little guy came in to give me a hug...which somehow very much resembled a wrestling hold but I chose to love it anyway...and once alone I drifted off.  Almost, anyway.

Dave:  "Hey, Kal...the kitten has a cockroach.  Don't let him on the bed."

Me:  "WHAT?!?!?!"

Worst sweet nothings said to me at bedtime.  Ever.

Dietary Documentation

Sometimes I'm paranoid.  It's true.  Like when my kid came home with an English homework assignment the other day.  My first clue that I had something to worry about?  It had nothing to do with grammar, punctuation, or anything Englishy.

Here's what it was.  He had to fill out a chart saying what he ate, who had made it, where it was bought, and if it was processed.

My paranoia?  Well, frankly, the filled-in chart might just be grounds for a CPS call.  While my child eats a lot, I can't exactly say he eats "well".  I tell ya, you can force broccoli on a seven-year-old, but teenagers are much more savvy in their methods of resistance.  Anyway, this chart went back to school all full of processed foods not made by mom.    So, yes, not only does he eat processed foods, I don't even cook it for him.

I will tell you this...since then I've been shoving apples and, yes, broccoli at him every chance I get.  OK, I need a redo on that chart!
