Be the Change

"Be the change that you wish to see in this world."
-Mahatma Gandhi

We all have ways that we choose to support positive change in this world of ours. My way, I've decided, is through my art. I absolutely want to be politically active but I've found that making phone calls, writing letters to the editor, showing up at a congressperson's office, etc. is not a fit for me. But selling my art as part of fundraising efforts...well...this is something that I can do, have done, and will continue to do.

So...through October 20th I will be donating 50% of my original art sales to the Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL), Texas 21 Chapter. More information may be found here. Let's make the climate great again!

Notes to my Teenage Self

I started this painting with the intention of letting go of parts of me and my life that were no longer serving me well. It quickly became a nurturing piece feeding the soul of my teenage self. I suppose letting go of things needed to start there. It's filled with words of wisdom, encouragement, and love for a seventeen year old who had just lost her grandmother. Though my outside appearance at that age absolutely did not look like this, the girl in the painting is a 17 year old representation of what I look like today.

I placed this painting on top of the piano my mother recently gave me. It had been my grandmother's. It felt right.

listen...

This week I was challenged to come up with words of wisdom. So many came to mind and I realized that they really all come down to one thing for me, listen. "Listen more and speak less often." "Be present in the moment and listen." And on and on. It's a big theme for me these days and one that for a while now I've been working to improve. It was also so much fun doing the whimsical yet somewhat chaotic doodles in the upper left! And around her I left calm and simplicity.

I'm so loving this class!

This painting is part of a year-long online art class (instructor Melody Ross).

Love and Wisdom

My big guy turned twenty yesterday. It was a rather lovely pairing having my first born's birthday occur on Mother's Day. I'm usually not one to go in for celebrating that holiday, but celebrating the birth of my kid...well, that's the best way to celebrate being a mother.

And I celebrate all that he has been, all that he is, and all that he will be. Love you, kiddo!

This was a special request from my open studio tour over the weekend. Hoooooo knew that owls were so popular?

The "Not my Dollar"

...is no longer my dollar.  I had carried it around in my car for about a month or so hoping to run into someone who needed it, asked for it, that it really belonged to (see my previous blog about the dollar).  And, oddly enough, during this time I was never in the position (when in my car) to hand it over.  I either didn't see anyone, was in the wrong lane, was driving quickly by, or something.

The other day I did finally find myself at a light directly next to a gentleman with a very dog-eared sign stating, "Just need a leg up."  I held my dollar up, he came to my car, I handed it to him, he mumbled a "thanks", and then he proceeded to walk down the line of cars, what I imagined he'd been and would be doing for some hours.

Now, his reaction to the "transaction" didn't surprise me at all, but I found that mine did.  For some reason over the past month I had built up in my head that it would feel good to let go of this dollar that was not my own.  And I have to say that it absolutely did not make me feel good, but it did make me feel.  I live a chunk of my life with my head buried in the sand as, admittedly, I simply cannot handle the anguish of the unknown strangers, the tragedies that unfold in this world every day, the injustice to our fellow humans and the animals of this world...and this "transaction" brought it home for me in that moment.  The tiniest dip of my toe into the pool of life that another experiences...and when the light turned green I was thrust back into my own life, almost as though nothing had happened...almost.
