Teddy Bear

And this happened...and it made me ever so happy.

I went shopping first thing this morning and as I was heading toward the dairy section to pick up some yogurt there was this guy. This most amazing guy. He was wearing pajamas, a T-shirt, and flip flops, and was pushing around a kid-size shopping cart. And this guy was not petite! I loved that he went shopping just the way he did.

Made me think I should bring my teddy bear shopping with me next time. Might just make someone's day like he made mine.

Behind

I had the oddest dream last night. I was a back seat driver. Now outside of my dreams, this is actually a bit of a reality...just ask my husband. I twitch, grab the elbow rest, and I "helpfully" offer suggestions.

But while I was a backseat driver in my dream, it was nothing like real life. I was, literally, backseat driving. As in I was the backseat of a car, all alone, yet I was in control of the driving of the vehicle. And I must say that it's a very odd thing sitting in the backseat of a car whilst controlling its every move. But that strangeness isn't what stuck with me. No. It was the odd wondering about how on earth I was managing to reach the pedals from the back seat with my short legs.

And I've been pondering that all day long.

Love in our House

What love is...

Me: "I just came in to tell you I love you." And I gave him a hug.

My big guy: "I love you, too, mom."

Me: "I just came in to tell you I love you." And I gave him a hug.

My little guy: "Making me a sandwich would mean you love me."

Well, reciprocal love is clearly hunger dependent.

Bee Awesome!

So I've been sporting a fanny pack again.  I rocked one in the early 90s when I was riding my bike everywhere.  Then again during the 00s.  But that fanny pack was big and bulky.  I could fit snacks, a wallet, my chap stick, and keys in there.  It bounced.  It jiggled.  It kind of drove me nuts.

Enter new fanny pack.  Very sleek.  Extremely tiny.  And it holds only my phone and car key.  It's awesome!

Dave (holding my new fanny pack up with a puzzled look on his face):  "What's this?"

Me:  "It's my fanny pack?"

Dave:  "What could possibly fit in it?"

Me:  "My phone fits just right."

Dave:  "You should call it a phoney pack."

Yup, that's my guy!  And you can definitely count on seeing me rockin' my phoney pack!

Flowers and Stripes

The other day when I was walking my big dog, Hazel, I spied ahead of me something of pure delight.  Actually, someone.  A lovely lady was walking my way, her shoulder-length wavy gray hair bounced with each step, and she was wearing the most magnificently happy outfit ever!

She had a long-sleeved blue, red, and white striped shirt that came down to her upper thighs, and then below that she had on turquoise flowered capris.  I smiled ear-to-ear as she and I were about to pass.

Me:  "Your outfit makes me so happy!"  I told her.

Lovely lady:  "Your dog makes me happy!"  She told me.

And then off we went in opposite directions, happiness enhanced.  Bliss!

...I knew right then that I had to tell this story on canvas.

Wakey, Wakey!

Apparently there's a right way and a wrong way to wake up my kid when there's something he and I need to do over the weekend.

Here's what I do (AKA "The Wrong Way"):  I walk in, tap his shoulder, tell him it's time to wake up, pull the covers down a bit.

Here's what he does:  Ignore, ignore, pull the covers back up, zzzzzzz.

Later that day I am told what I should do to wake him up:

"Do something repetitive and loud until I get up and make sure you're a distance away so that when I thrash around kicking and hitting to make the noise stop I don't hurt you."

Well, now, that was a very helpful suggestion.

Talking to Strangers can be Quite Delicious

It's what our parents all warned us about, but I find it rather delightful.  And, guess what, sometimes it has the nicest consequences.

A month or so ago I was standing in line to check out my groceries.  I could overhear a conversation at the next register.  The cashier was asking the customer how his day was going so far and the customer had a lovely story about volunteering at a school park doing landscaping.  And then he mentioned my school.

So I'm standing there thinking, "I should go tell him I work there and tell him how thankful I was for his kindness."  But then I lost my gumption as I passed him and kept walking out to my car.  Full of regret.  Kicking myself in the shin.

As I put my bags in my car I figured I'd look around to see if I could possibly have a second chance at it.  But no, no sign of him at all.  I hung my head, took my cart to the cart return, turned around, and there he was.  So I went up to that young fella, told him I'd overheard him (stalker, crazy lady that I am), told him my connection, and proceeded to thank him every so much.

And guess what...he was doing the volunteer work as part of his employer's mission to help the community.  And then he gave me a card with a code on it and said when I put the code in, something wonderful would show up in the mail.  And today it did!  I'm three nutritious bars richer, and I feel super warm in my heart.

So go talk to a stranger.  Turns out it can be quite delicious.

Ups, Downs, and Awe

You know, you're up...and then you're down.

My up?  Well, I got to have two seconds of fame when I appeared on NBC's "Revolution" last night.  AWESOME!!  So today when I picked up my little guy from school (his bike had a flat, so I came to his rescue), I told him, "All day people have been stopping me on the streets to tell me recognized me from TV last night!!"

My down?  Well, that dose of realism that my kid is always good for.  "Mom, your facebook friends online don't count as people on the streets."

<Silence as I pondered the fact that I'd just been busted.>

Me:  "So did you tell all your friends that your mom was on TV last night?

Little guy:  "I didn't tell any of them, mom."

Apparently two seconds of fame doesn't automatically guarantee awe from your kid.  Luckily I know that making him cookies does.
