I See your True Colors

They shine through, my friends.

"I See your True Colors"
Original available here for $125.
24"x24"
Prints available on request.

I started painting over some of my older paintings. This is the first of a number of paintings I'll be doing this with. The first stroke was the hardest, and then I embraced the freedom.

This is the painting I painted over.

The first stroke was the scariest one.

Ascending Toward the Surface

Steadily moving toward a new breath while embracing the stillness.

I'm absolutely loving doing abstracts these days...they are feeding my soul.

Stepping into Klimt's Shoes II

I was commissioned to create my version of a Klimt painting. This is the second one I've done. It's such an intensely wonderful and challenging experience stepping into the shoes of a master, trying to determine and recreate the layers they lay down. I'm a huge Klimt fan so this was pure delight. Now that she's done I'm having so much fun standing back and taking in all the sparkly gold.

She's off to her new home in just a bit. I'm going to miss her.

Stepping into Klimt's Shoes

It's amazing how much you can learn by doing your own version of a master's painting. Layer upon layer, detail upon detail. I wonder if Klimt's layers look at all like my own...did we take similar steps to end up at a similar ending point? Gosh, I'd love to know.

In Full Bloom - Part 2

For several weeks now I've noticed a crushed snuff can in the park grass on my walks with Hazel. It has kind of driven me nuts as all litter does, but I just left it there. Last night as I passed it once again I promised myself that I'd pick it up the next night and dispose of it properly. Well, tonight was the next night. And, yes, I did pick it up and dispose of it properly. But the funny thing is, it triggered a memory I'd not thought about in many, many years. One day when I was walking down the street where I grew up I'd spied a snuff can. And intact one. And I'd picked up that can, too. Only that can had snuff in it. Someone else's lost snuff. And I opened it up, pinched a bit of it, and placed it between my lower lip and my teeth. It remained there for some amount of time way less than a fraction of a second before I spit that stuff right on out. Patooey! And I hate to say it, but I suspect that I did not dispose of that snuff can properly.

I finished this painting. Here's the finished piece and below are the last few stages.

"In Full Bloom"
I added details to the flowers.
I used a sponge to add a lacy look to my white flowers.
I also used a blend of white, yellow, and off white at the
bottom to cover all the drips and further refine the
leaves that were hanging down. I thought I was done
but then I realized I wanted to add more green
within the bouquet.
This was an absolute joy to paint!

In Full Bloom - Part 1

I have a love hate thing with bangs. When I get them I love them. And then after a while I hate them. When I grow my bangs out I love not having them. And then after a while I miss them. Right now I'm at the missing stage. But I think rather than diving all in, I'm going to go for longish bangs. The kind they'll give you but they won't do free bang trims in between because they're not truly bangs. I certainly am grateful to have this life I lead where I can consider my bangs' length my biggest current decision.

And I started another flower painting. I'm am so in love with flowers right now!

I started by creating the basic shapes of
a vase with a bunch of flowers in it.

I added another layer of color and lightened the vase
a bit. I also sprayed the flowers with lavender water.

I began laying in come color and continued
with the lavender water.

More color! More lavender water!
I love using the lavender water.
Really gets me in a flowery mood!
Excited to finish this one!

Dreamer - Part 3

"Dreamer"
I neglected to document the final stages of this painting. In addition to giving her wavy hair and adding some green to the background, I painted over her right eye at least five times as I tried and tried to get that eye right...not too heavy, not too light, just right. I'm not sure it's "just right", but it is right enough. I like that her face isn't that of complete serenity. There's just the slightest touch of angst. Just like in all of us.

Dreamer - Part 2

My little guy got some chips today at a Subway. They were biscuit and gravy flavored. Have you ever heard of such a thing? They had other crazy flavors, too, but I only offered to pay for one bag and that's the one he picked. Against my better judgment, I tried one of them. And you know what? Those crazy chips did taste exactly like biscuits and gravy. I felt like I was on some futuristic TV show where I ordered a meal in a pill form and it tasted like the meal I wanted. While I can't really recommend them as a yummy addition to any meal, I will definitely recommend them as a weird space-age taste experience.

I've continued working on this painting but I'm not ready to call it done. I still have work to do on her. I like the direction it's heading, though. Maybe tomorrow will be "finish" day.

I extended her chin lower and added more color
to her hair. I also added more ribbons.

I added a brown tone to her hair.

I added even more brown and lengthened her eyelashes.
I think they're too thick and dark. I also added
pink to the ribbons and darkened her lips.

I lightened her lashes and worked on the background a bit.

Dreamer - Part 1

Even dogs like to feel fancy. I don't know about bows, painted nails and such, but I do know that when I put a bandana around Hazel's neck she clearly releases her inner cowgirl and struts her stuff. So this week she's got her pink outfit on. I'm thinking a sporty red for next week.

I started on a new painting. I've been exploring all things flowers and loving it!

I started with an abstract background, fully
planning on painting over much of it.
I laid in the basic shape of a woman
wearing a floral headband.
I added color to a lot of the elements.
I added texture to her hair and added another layer to
her face, neck, shoulders, and dress.
I added another layer of paint and
added highlights to the flowers.
I also added ribbons.
She still needs tons of work. Her chin isn't big enough and I want to work on her flesh tones. I also want to do more with her hair.

Love and Light

We've got lovely family joining us for the next couple of days, and for the first time in years we don't have a tree to decorate. I didn't even drag our porch plant in and put lights on it like I usually do. My inner voice just kept shouting...

"No tree, no tree, no tree!"

So "no tree" it is. Instead, this year I just tacked strings of colorful lights up, down, and all around on our living room walls.

Perfection!

Following Directions

I'm feeling so proud of my husband.

He's the kind of guy who is likely to say, "I don't need no stinkin' directions," whenever we're installing something.  He likes to just figure it out as he goes and, by golly, he manages to guess correctly most every time.

But even he knows better than to try that with something from IKEA.  Yup, that awesome dude of mine worked through the assembly of our new dining table and chairs step by step with those crazy picture directions.

Me:  "Need any help?"

Dave:  "I don't need no stinkin' help."

Works for me!

Mammogram Time

What does the end of summer mean?  Back to school?  Well, yes.  Cooler weather on the way?  Um, no, not for a while.  I'll just tell ya what it means...it's mammogram time.

And now all of a sudden I want to break out in song, M.C. Hammer style.

"Mammogram Time...Can't touch them!"

Yeah, that didn't go my way.

But what cracks me up at these things is that I'm always asked two questions.

"Do you have implants?"  Seriously?!?!  You're looking right at me and asking that?  Um, no, obviously.

and...

"Does this hurt?"  Seriously (again)?!?!  You're looking right at some of me being smooshed in between these plates that you're cranking down on with no possible end in sight.

All that said, I'm filled with gratitude that such procedures exist...and super happy that I don't have to do it again until next year.
