Wounded

I was inspired by one of my wonderful new Pantsuit Nation friends to create a companion piece to my painting, "Your heart knows the way. Run in that direction". So I created a piece reflecting my experience and the experience of many others since the election. I started by scribing my thoughts about the election results, my sadness and my hopes. I crumpled the sheets of paper and lit parts of it on fire. I set those thoughts free to go wherever they needed to go. The remaining bits of paper became the background of my piece. I painted the burned holes red to reflect the wounding that so, so many have felt, their safety and well being now feeling threatened.

I'm thankful that I'm surrounded by so many people who, while acknowledging the negative direction that this election may represent, also see the positive that is coming from it as well. The stirring of activism, the connecting with strangers that might not have ever happened otherwise.

I'm going to have prints of this painting available here and will donate $5 per sale to the ACLU. The original may be purchased at the link below the picture.

Balance through Connection

I've felt called to activism since the election and have been raising money for different organizations from the sales of my art. This week I found myself craving balance and compassion and the idea for this painting came to mind. All of our beautiful differences complement each other and together I really do think we can work toward balance and peace in our world.

I'm going to give a portion of the sales of this image to Girl Forward, an organization that creates amazing opportunities for refugee girls. I'll be donating $50 from the sale of this original painting and then $5 for each 12"x12" print.

Please spread the word.

Stepping into Klimt's Shoes II

I was commissioned to create my version of a Klimt painting. This is the second one I've done. It's such an intensely wonderful and challenging experience stepping into the shoes of a master, trying to determine and recreate the layers they lay down. I'm a huge Klimt fan so this was pure delight. Now that she's done I'm having so much fun standing back and taking in all the sparkly gold.

She's off to her new home in just a bit. I'm going to miss her.

2020

So I was a Bernie girl WAY before I was a Hillary girl. And now that the election is over, I'm back to being a Bernie girl in a HUGE way. I collaborated with a wonderful high school friend of mine, Conrad Gonzalez, to create these shirts. We hope that they will be part of the social machine that brings Bernie back as a candidate in 2020.

If you're interested, we've got shirts for men and women (children and baby sizes coming soon)...and they're 30% off through Sunday if you use the code "LOVEZGIFTS50". Here's the link to our shop: http://www.zazzle.com/politipro

And here are photos of our designs. I'm always passionate about my art, but it was pure delight and did my heart such good to help bring these into reality.

Be Mindful

I began this painting a couple of days after the election. I was feeling keenly aware of the need for mindfulness...that our nation's children are looking to us to show them how they may remain positive and loving in this world. I had planned on adding many more layers but somehow she felt complete as is, her rawness making the need for our mindfulness that much more powerful.

Your heart knows the way. Run in that direction.

I tend to keep my political leanings separate from my art...but as I was nearing the end of this painting, just two days before the election, apparently my subconscious had a different plan. It started popping out at me bit by bit. The white of her dress (as well as the green and purple in the background) a tribute to the suffrage movement. The heart blue as I dream the electoral map will be. The protective placement of the heart, because, well, you know. The silver hair representing the wisdom of the choice she's making. The background chaotic as all the craziness that this electoral season has been, though she remains clear and focused.

My friends, vote with your heart. Vote with your intellect. Vote.
