Targeted

I let our dogs out in the back yard. They love it out there. There's chickens to look at, a chain link fence to see the front yard, and a fabulous deck to jump off of. It's small, but they love it.

But this time they were barking like crazy. And they would. not. stop. So I got up to see what all the ruckus was about and, by golly, there was something in the yard next door. Something unfamiliar. Something threatening. Something downright wrong.

It was the scariest archery target EVER!

Yup, my amazing guard dogs were targeting the target. Bull's eye!

Love my girls....

Chicken Run

It's amazing when you find things on the internet. But what's even more amazing is when internet information finds you.

This very thing happened quite recently. You know I do this blog thing. And you know I paint lots of pictures. And of course you know that I adore my chickens. Well, these three collided in a perfect storm of information. Because of all of those things a lovely lady and I struck up a conversation and she let me in on the fact that chickens love cottage cheese.

So when I went to the store I bought some.

And they LOVED it! Especially Red. She loves it so much that she'll let me pet her the entire time she eats. And, bonus, every time I walk out in the back yard that sweet girl runs like the dickens to see me the cottage cheese.

Chicken love....

Rolling Roly Poly

Sometimes random thoughts...they just show up outa nowhere. Seriously, that's my only explanation for this.

I was just sitting here wondering what happens to a roly poly if it loses the functioning of some of its many, many legs. Well, I thought, of course it would need to have a wheel to replace the troublesome limbs.

And then it would be a rolling roly poly.

Ya, I dunno, I didn't get much sleep last night...but I must admit I'm rather in love with this little dude!

Cat Dog

So on the face of it I must say our dogs look confused, though when I really look at the situation I must conclude that they are brilliant.

Our old dog, Scout, who feigns deafness, blindness, and an extreme inability to move with any agility whatsoever, has convinced our young dog, Hazel, to work with her in a plot. Yes, a plot. While Hazel distracts us with her crazy irresistible cuteness, Scout ever so gingerly stands up so her front feet reach the pot stand, nudges the cat dish off of the edge, and when it clangs to the ground she goes right back to her deaf/blind/arthritic routine.

So what are we forced to do once this occurs and there's a cat food explosion in our kitchen? Well, we call our dogs over to clean up the mess...which they eagerly do.

Yup, they may look like dogs but they have the genius and appetite of cats.

A Lack of Space

I've been trying to teach an old dog a new trick.

The old dog being me, and the new trick being only using one space between sentences when I'm typing.

I have some friends who are editors and I keep hearing them griping about writers using the double space. I've kept my mouth shut as I, myself, am guilty of that double spacing. It's how I was taught thirty-two years ago when I took typing in high school. We practiced it, and practiced it, and practiced it. We were knocked down grade-wise if we didn't do a double space. So I was quite the good double spacer, of course.

But after a couple of months' effort, this old dog no longer double spaces. Yup, I'm rockin' the single space nearly 100% of the time.

I think I may go howl at the moon to celebrate.

Can you Spot the Freckles?

In my continuing effort to learn how to draw with henna, here's my latest forearm piece. And I do believe that I'm improving...bit by itty bitty bit.

What I'm suddenly aware of, that I hadn't noticed before, is that I have freckles on my arms. A lot of freckles. So many that I ended up looking at the photo I had taken right after I applied the henna to see if it was just me sloppily splattering henna around.

But nope, I wasn't sloppy, just freckly.

Can you spot the freckles?

Our Amazing Coffee Community

This morning I opened the dishwasher and made a gruesome discovery.

Yes, Dave's French press had broken sometime during the night. Knowing that this tragedy simply couldn't go unmarked, I sketched out a quick tombstone and took a photo to comemerate the sad occasion. I then posted the photo on facebook. I expected a "like" or two, but the outpouring of support left me in awe of just how amazing the coffee community is.

Dave was offered condolences, he was provided with suggestions for a new one, and someone was even willing to give him a spare they had. But what truly touched my heart is that a lovely neighbor offered to loan us theirs right away so Dave could deal with what truly was an emergency situation.

Somehow Dave managed to gather his wits about him and get himself to the coffee shop this morning and then go to the store to purchase a better, more amazing and awesome French press. And while the French press he'd so loved just yesterday lay broken and discarded in the trash can, he made the most amazing cup of coffee ever.

R.I.P. old French press...you were loved.

And this is how I "broke" the news to Dave about his beloved French press.

Am I an awesome wife or what?!?!

How do you spell "Happy"?

There have been a rash of chess game requests at my house lately.

OK, to be totally honest, I don't like playing chess. I know how to play, I've known since I was a kid, but when I tune into my feelings...well, the inner me says, "uh-uh". I'm much more of a Scrabble girl. Now that game makes me feel good (almost every time).

But even though I made it perfectly clear to my family that I don't like the game, each of them managed to convince me to play them. So I did, under duress.

I played the big guy...I won.

Then I played Dave...I won.

Lastly the little guy...you got it, I won.

But this chess-winnin' girl just wanted to play Scrabble.

Me: "Will you play Scrabble with me?"

Little guy: "Sure."

And we played. And he won his first game ever against one of his parents. And I was so happy!

A Matter of Taste

And sometimes I just have to question my lovable husband.

Dave: "Have you ever had P.B. on hash browns?"

Me: "No."

Dave: "It's my opinion the peanut butter goes well on everything...I'll report back."

OK, ew, ew, ew!

Dave commenced with the clanging of pans in the kitchen and in just a short bit...

Dave: "Maybe I'll just put ketchup on it."

The world is right once again.

Up All Night

I'm am so not a night owl.

But the Austin allergies have forced their hand and brought out my inner night owl. Well, at least my inner sneezing-all-night owl.

I get ready for bed...I'm fine.

I fall asleep...I'm fine.

1:00 a.m. rolls around...AAAAA-CHOOOOO!

1:30...AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO!

2:00...AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO!

2:01...Dave says, "Blow your nose."

2:02...PBBBBBB! (That's the sound of my nose being blown.)

2:03...Me, "Whew, thanks."

2:30...AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO!

3:00...AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO!

4:00...AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO! AAAAA-CHOOOOO!

5:30..."beep, beep, beep, beep" goes my alarm.

And this sneezing-all-night owl wishes for the luxury of all day sleep that nocturnal animals are given. PBBBBBB!

Do-Re-Mi...

I went shopping super early in the morning, it's my favorite time to do it after all. And when I saw Dave, well, this is how it went.

Me: "You're welcome for that."

OK, a little explanation as that likely makes absolutely no sense. When my big guy was little and he was learning to be super polite, he'd jump the gun on the "your welcome" part. Before anyone even had the chance to say, "Thank you," he'd proudly pipe up and say, "You're welcome for that!"

Dave: "Gee, it's always about you, isn't it?"

OK, a little explanation again. We like to jokingly accuse each other of being narcissistic...though we aren't...or does that make us narcissistic? Hmmmmm...

Me: "Yeah, it's all about me."

Dave: "Your so narcissistic you think mi is the only note in the scale."

And then we broke out into song. "Doe a deer, a female deer...."

P.S. I know I should've had this lovely little note in the mi spot, but she's so much cuter without a line going through her face. :-)

Medusa and the Mermaid

The other day it was super windy, and my hair, that is hardly what one would call tame, was doing its very best Medusa impression...and it was doing a fantastic job of it, I must say. I walked into the gym and the guy by the card reader said, "I like your hair."

Me: "Um, thanks." And I did my best to tamp it down just a tad. And then it sprang right back.

I did my weights, I did my cardio, I did my ab work, and then I went into the bathroom to do my, well, you know. When I went to wash my hands a woman went to the other sink. Her hair was the most amazing turquoise blue and the most spectacular brilliant green. I was standing next to what surely must've been a mermaid who'd gained her legs.

Me: "I like your hair."

Awesome walking mermaid chick: "Thanks!"

Medusa and the mermaid...fabulous!

Going Nuts

Dave loves mixed nuts. They go in his cereal. He'll pop one or two in his mouth as he waits for his coffee to be ready. He'll even grab a handful after a workout. Yum!

Know who else loves mixed nuts? Our dogs, that's who. While our dogs are totally clearly hard of hearing when we want them to stop barking or to come inside when they aren't quite ready, when Dave takes the jar of nuts out of the cupboard and just begins to unscrew the lid, our dogs dash to the kitchen faster than you can say "cashew".

And there they wait, willing to sit, shake, down, play dead, or speak in anticipation of a Brazil nut (Nothing against Brazil, but do humans even like those nuts? I'm convinced they're designed to be dog snacks.).

Yup, our dogs go nuts for nuts.

The Stuff of Daydreams

As part of this amazing class I'm taking, Dancing with Your Dreams (lesson by Kristen Powers), I created a small piece about my favorite stuff of daydreams. This was super exciting for me because while I mostly remember my daydreams, I hardly ever remember my night dreams.

And what's awesome about what I daydream about is that when I'm actually doing the things I daydream about I'm at my peak of daydreaming. A lovely circle of daydreamness.

Fabulous daydream stuff...

For the Love of Oatmeal

Little known fact, at least a little known fact to me, chickens love oatmeal.

It's been hovering around freezing here lately and being the uber concerned chicken mom that I am, I did a wee bit of googling. I read that oatmeal is the perfect winter snack for chickens.

So I cooked up a batch. No salt, no brown sugar, no butter, no raisins...and cooled to room temp...bleck. But for those chickens it was the best breakfast ever!

Tomorrow, waffles!

Double the Love

Our dogs.

They are so freakin' adorable.

Dave was sitting in his chair watching a football game or some such thing. Scout walked over and stood before him. The sweet old girl looked at him with the intense love in her eyes that only an old dog with cataracts can. Dave raised one foot and rubbed her chest with his foot.

This did not go unnoticed by Hazel, and she ran over and stood before Dave. So up went Dave's other foot.

Happy, happy dogs...much loved Dave.

Dark Side

A couple of weeks ago my mother gave me two canvases. She'd decided that she was no longer going to need them because she didn't think she'd be able to paint the images she'd hoped. Her hands no longer work as well as they once did and her giving the canvases to me was incredibly symbolic. A passing of the torch sort of thing. While my mom and I don't share the same style of painting, we do both share a love of it and I count her as one of my biggest fans and supporters.

So this morning when I started on one of the amazing assignments I've been doing as part of Dancing with Your Dreams, I felt this was the right time to pull out one of my mom's canvases. This project/assignment was titled "Dark Side" (taught by the amazing Michelle Kral). For me, "dark side" doesn't necessarily mean negative, it can mean the place within, perhaps something private, something that is being worked on. Dark perhaps means shadowed.

Anyway, the project started with writing words with charcoal...words that just popped into my mind. And the first word I wrote was "loss" which I think the canvas represents for my mom. But then many other words spilled onto the canvas, "vision", "love", "taste", "bliss", and on and on till it was covered. Then the paint, colors that are not part of my normal pallet. I don't know why, but I found myself putting paint on spots and then closing my eyes and painting blind. Faces then appeared and I did my best to bring them forth. I was surprised to find that they didn't need all of their features, that they lacked parts of what make us feel fully formed, yet they felt complete to me. And then out of nowhere a delightfully plump goddess appeared. My favorite thing my mom has created, both in sculpture and paint, have been her plump goddesses (I'm not sure what she calls them, but that's what I think of them as). Welcome little goddess! Scroll down to see the stages of this piece being created.

I cannot say enough about this amazing course I'm taking. Thank you, Amy Burke O'Toole, for putting it together!

This painting in stages...

Scribing words with charcoal that popped into my head.

Applying paint with my eyes closed.

"Scratching" the surface of the paint with my charcoal.

Finding the faces.

Adding details...and the goddess appeared! Yes, that is a basting brush.

More details...and what I thought was a toothy grin became a hand.

Realizing that this was a vertical piece, not horizontal.

Final touches and signing the piece.

Christmas All Year Long

We still have all of our holiday decorations up. Not that that's a huge deal as all we put up were two strands of lights that I tacked to our walls in a whimsical way. It's not like one year when I was a kid and our Christmas tree stayed up ALL YEAR LONG when my brother and I refused to help my mom put it away. Now a Christmas tree in August...that's a fun thing to explain to your friends when they show up for a summertime slumber party.

Anyway, I think I might just "pull a mom" and leave the lights up all year long. Not because no one will help take them down, no, nothing like that. I think I'll just leave them up because every time I look at them I feel all happy inside.

Yup, this might be the year my kids remember Christmas happening all year long.

Asleep

You know how when your kids were little you could just stare at them for hours on end...as they played, as they ate, as they sang and danced. But once they become teenagers if you attempt to stare at them, you're greeted with, "What are you looking at?!?!"

So while I'm not always a huge fan of teenage hormones, I have to say that I've found a perk that I particularly love...the "sleeping in" perk. When I go into their rooms at noon on the weekends to wake them up so they can finally start their day, I'm afforded uninterrupted staring time. I can leisurely take in the serenity of their sleeping faces, the way they sleep as though they know they're safe, the shadow of a mustache appearing, and the small twitches of their dreaming eyes. Occasionally they'll wake up and catch me, admonishing me with a "You're creepy, mom!" But most of the time I'm able to lean in and kiss their cheek to wake them up.

Pure mommy bliss.

Bandanna Love

Bandannas.

They might not play a huge role in your home, but at the Parsons' house...they're superstars.

How many ways can we use a bandanna? Well, here's ten just off the top of my head.

1. as a cloth napkin
2. to blow a nose
3. outfits for our dogs
4. a tool to attempt to control my hair
5. a mask when we're working with sawdust, etc.
6. a spill sopper upper
7. a potholder when doubled up
8. a dust cloth
9. something to "whip" your brother with

and our dogs' favorite...
10. a chew toy

Bandannas...I highly recommend them.

He is Not Amused

So we've had our cat door for a couple of weeks now. Our little cat, Tommy, is pretty much grooving on it. He can go out when he wants, come in when he wants, and exercise his independence as the awesome teenage cat that he is.

Pug, on the other hand, is not amused. While he understands the concept of independence, he prefers to have things the way they've always been.

You know, the way in which the humans were his minions. He could stand at the door and stare at it and we'd get up and let him out. He could stand on our back porch staring in and we'd open the door for him...and he'd invariably stand there a while considering if we were worth of his presence...or not.

With the cat door we humans are no longer, well, minions.

Bless his stubborn little feline heart....

Space, the Final Frontier

Know how you know your sixteen-year-old kid has the most awesome friends possible in this universe of ours?

Well, you go outside and find a sock that their friend accidentally dropped in the driveway when he was leaving. And is it a tube sock with stripes? No. Is it a thick wool wintry sock? Nah, too practical. Is it an argyle sock? Nope, though that would be cool, too.

No, it's the most awesome Spock sock ever.  Yes, Spock sock. The sock...it looks like Spock, pointy ears and all. And that is awesome...and so is that kid.

Today's Henna

I'm learning...and possibly even improving.

That's all I can ask, right?

I noticed last night that my previous henna had completely vanished. So of course it was time for another. Of course!

Here's how I think I'm learning and improving.

1. I'm learning that the further away from my hands, the longer the henna seems to last. All that handwashing takes its toll.

2. I'm squeezing the henna bag more gently and evenly. Makes my lines more smooth. I think. I hope. And I don't have a hand cramp. Yup, last time I had a hand cramp that lasted the entire evening.

3. Perfection is the furthest thing from my mind. Happily I don't even know what that word means.

Anyway, this is super fun! Join me sometime!!

Chickens say, "No Problem!"

We've had freezing temps lately, mid 20s freezing temps last night. So of course I worried about my chickens. I lump them in the "pet" category rather than the "wild critter" category, and so I assume that they need to be brought inside to stay warm so they'll be OK....in spite of the articles I've read and the chicken owning friends of mine stating that they're fine left outside. But I was still super nervous last night as I was about to fall asleep.

Me: "I hope the chickens will be OK."

Dave: "They birds. They'll be fine just like all the other birds sleeping outside tonight."

Me: "Alright."

And by golly they did survive. Relief washed over me when I heard their cooing when I let the dogs and cats out this morning.

"No problem!" said the chickens.

Fliptastic

Yup, that's my little guy. What with doing karate and being on the high school wrestling team, that kid is freakishly fliptastic. Now, mind you, by "fliptastic" I don't mean that he's doing flips all about the house. Nope, the kid finds every opportunity to attempt to flip anyone smaller than he is in the house...which leaves only me. I, however, am not fliptastic. And by "not fliptastic" I mean that when he tries to flip me I pull his leg hairs, I tell him that I'll never make him sandwiches again, I scream and shout.

And while I'm quite sure that the flipping attempts will continue to occur, I'm also quite sure that I'll continue to foil said attempts.

Keeping Close

My sweet old lady dog, Scout...

I took her to the vet today for a bit of blood work to make sure she could continue taking her incontinence meds (old lady dog problems). As we sat in the waiting room, she to my left looking away, she kept scooching backward, inch by inch. I found myself moving to the next chair down the line three times as she scooch, scooch, scooched.

My precious girl, keeping close to her mama. Love....

Waiting Blissfully

I took my little guy and my niece to an ice skating rink the other day. I didn't skate because, well, basically I'm a wimp. I don't like to be cold. Ice skates make my feet hurt. And most of all, I don't like to fall on really hard surfaces (which always happens).

But those young'uns had a blast. And while they skated seemingly endless ovals, I blissfully waited, watched, and videotaped. Good times were had by all.

I drew this piece back in October when I was visiting my brother's family and I accidentally left this and one more drawing. My adorable niece found them and when they came last week they brought them. It was so much fun painting it after all this time!

Feelin' Fabulous

It all started with that foul smelling mac-n-cheese that had been fermenting in our fridge for about a month. Out it went. And then I saw the guys' left-over ribs from a day too long ago for me to have a specific memory. Out. Then the moldy cheese...the salad dressing that expired in 2013...the tomato sauce with ghastly floaters. Out, out, OUT!

And then I couldn't stop.

I hit the shelves under the hanging pots. I dug into the cupboards over the microwave. I even delved into the stash of all our baking supplies. And two trash bags later I declared us clear of all out of date, unwanted, and disgusting food items.

If it's wrong for this to make me so deliriously blissed out and feelin' all fabulous, then I don't wanna be right.

My Heart Swells

I took my beautiful sister-in-law and my amazing niece and nephew to the airport today. Sniff...sniff....

As we drove my sister-in-law asked them what the high and low points of the trip were.

High point for my amazing nephew: "Playing with everyone."

Low point: "I don't think there was a low point."

High point for my amazing niece: "The ornament making party."

Low point: "Right now."

My heart swells with love and affection for them...till this summer, my sweets.

Ideas Flow

I'm super lucky to have a kid who is super flexible about allowing his mama's ideas to flow...even if they're flowing all over him.

Today my mom and her lovely boyfriend came over for a late Christmas celebration. As was the tradition each year when I was a kid, my mom brought out all sorts of ornament making supplies. Everyone sat down and diligently began creating ornaments.  Me?  Well, while I did not make an ornament, I did let my creativity flow.

I clipped sparkly bits in my little guy's hair. Then I stuck golden squares to his cheeks to create "freckles". Then I hung beads around his neck. Then I put a sparkly choker around his forehead.

I'm thankful for fun family events and for my awesomely flexible kid.

This painting is also an ideas flow kind of thing. I just did random strokes, then stared at it for a bit until things simply managed to appear. Such fun!

What Kitty Cat Wants, Kitty Cat Gets

Our cats want in. Then they want out. Then they want in. Then they want out. And on and on and on....

So my brilliant husband installed a cat door. It should all be fine and dandy now. The cats should be totally independent. Right?

Well, perhaps someday, but for now here's how it goes.

The cats want in. We go outside and shove them in the cat door. The cats want out. We shove them out the cat door. And on and on and on....

Our cats sure have well trained humans.
