Hope

"Hope is the ability to hear the melody of the future." - unknown author

"Hope"
This piece began as a quick pencil sketch, then ink over that, and then it sat for a while as I pondered what to do next. I kept feeling like I should finish her out, adding color to her entirety, but my inner voice kept saying, "Leave her be." And I did...all except for the heart as it was sending echos of a piece I did in early November ("Your heart knows the way. Run in that direction.")

A Mermaid's Plea

I love painting mermaids. I've always allowed for the possibility that they are, in fact, real. I started out with the intention of painting a happy, blissful mermaid, but the news of our likely dismantling E.P.A. took me in another direction. Just like all the other creatures in the ocean, she's counting on us to protect her, to see that she's worth saving.

For the Love of Frida

I'm on a deliciously fun adventure with cartooning and happily Frida popped into my head. This is my fourth, and decidedly most whimsical, painting of Frida. It's most definitely not my last painting of her. She's holding her beloved paintbrushes.

And I'm considering putting her on t-shirts...let me know if you're interested.

And through it all we can keep smiling...

...because there's power in optimism.

And I continue to be inspired by one of my student's drawings. :-)

Also, I love using small canvases as paint pallets and then painting on top of what becomes a very colorful, highly textured surface.

Slouch Caps to Benefit the Southern Poverty Law Center

I just added slouch caps to my Etsy page! I made more, but I ended up falling in love with and keeping 4 of them! :-) And then there are the two I made for my boys...they love them, too! Here's my Etsy site: https://www.etsy.com/shop/KaliParsonsArt?ref=hdr_shop_menu

Anyway, I upcycle them from t-shirts, sweaters, leftover material, and anything else folks send my way. Please understand that I'm not a seamstress. I simply consider myself a "Queen of the Straight Stitch". So set your quality expectations accordingly.

Purchases of my slouch caps (and much of my other art) help raise money for me to donate. Sales of my slouch caps benefit the Southern Poverty Law Center...because they most definitely are not slouches.

And please excuse my selfie style photos...I'm the most convenient model I've got.

Thank you!

And I made another pussyhat...I love this one and it will be SO HARD to let go of it!
Its sale will benefit Planned Parenthood.

Peace, Love, and Pussyhats Stick Figure

You likely know that for 13 years I've been working with three, four, and five year olds who happen to have disabilities. I was recently inspired by the cutest little stick figure that one of my students drew, so I drew my own...a la pussyhat! I think I'm in love with her! And I put her on t-shirts and mugs! (Click on those words if you want to see them in my Zazzle shop.)

Her face becomes the color of the shirt. I love this!

And Even More Pussyhats!

Kali is my name and making pussyhats is my game. :-)

I've added a few more pussyhats to the fundraising section of my Etsy site. Sales of my pussyhats will benefit Planned Parenthood. I hope to make more over spring break. If you live locally (in Austin, TX) and can pick the pussyhat up at my house, no need to order on Etsy. Just message me so the shipping charges can be avoided. Thank you, friends! Here's the link if you're interested. https://www.etsy.com/shop/KaliParsonsArt?ref=hdr_shop_menu

A HUGE thank you to those who have purchased my pussyhats!

P.S. I'm happily accepting sweater/fleece donations!

Here's what I've recently added to my Etsy shop.

And just for fun I made this slouch cap for myself!

Love is...

When I started this painting it immediately felt like a "Calgon, take me away" piece. Since November I've had a number of politically weightier pieces and this one is decidedly not that. I love using writing in my art and I wrote and wrote what I wish for my children, for my family, for my friends, for everyone...all that love is. And then topped it with some delicious whimsy.

For All of Our Children

My husband recently did a photo shoot of one of my friend's kiddos. I was incredibly struck by one of the photos, the shadows so compelling that I was inspired to capture them.

As I painted my version of this beautiful young man I thought of my own boys and all of the children I teach and all of my friends' children, and I felt incredibly protective of their present and future. Let's do right by them.
