Hear me Roar

Hear me roar....

Feeling wonderfully inspired by the Women's March in Austin, Texas on Saturday. And the best thing about this painting is that my 21 year old son sat beside me as I sketched and then painted, all the while sketching his own amazing version.  Beyond awesome! Hear US roar!

Meow!

I had the best time with girlfriends Saturday night. We cut up old sweaters and made cozy cat hats. Here are mine! Perfect for wearing at the march at the Capitol if I decide to go...sometimes peaceful rebellion comes in the form of a homemade hat. "Meow!"

I win!

So our sweet cat, Ruby, has taken a liking to sleeping in our cloth napkin bin. While I'm sure it's quite cozy, it's also quite sneezy to her humans. So...I totally sabotaged that little cutie. I found a piece of particle board that was part of a frame, painted it, and created a lid. I win! (And she still totally loves me.)

For Teresa

I found out this morning that you'd died, Teresa. I'm flooded with memories of you. The crazy fun activities you did with my students, the way you always ran just a bit late and were always worth the wait, your laugh, the tales you told of your beloved dog, and your loving friendship. I remember one day you took a moment to spontaneously teach me how to draw trees. This was years before I began my own artistic adventure and I always, always think of you when I draw or paint a tree. I can't think of the way limbs emerge from the trunk without you crossing my mind. I know this will always be the case. I think you were so keenly aware of trees because of your beautiful love of squirrels. I think you saw trees through their eyes.

When you left Zilker I was asked to do a short sendoff in front of the entire staff. For some reason you were late (go figure!) and I gave the sendoff in your absence. It went perfectly! And then you showed up and I was asked to do it again. I cried and then sobbed my way through a sendoff. I've got the same feeling tonight. If I drank beer I'd raise a glass in your honor. But since I don't, I painted a squirrel in a tree in your honor. If there's a heaven, it's filled with frolicking squirrels. I love you. Thank you for being my friend.

Fearless...

As I was painting this I thought of a friend and the path she's on right now...and then I thought of another friend, and another, and another...and myself. Fearless is not simply the absence of fear, but rather the willingness to move forward no matter what.

I like how the drips go down the sides of the canvas.

Notes to my Teenage Self

I started this painting with the intention of letting go of parts of me and my life that were no longer serving me well. It quickly became a nurturing piece feeding the soul of my teenage self. I suppose letting go of things needed to start there. It's filled with words of wisdom, encouragement, and love for a seventeen year old who had just lost her grandmother. Though my outside appearance at that age absolutely did not look like this, the girl in the painting is a 17 year old representation of what I look like today.

I placed this painting on top of the piano my mother recently gave me. It had been my grandmother's. It felt right.

Make it Happen

My first painting of the year is filled with my thoughts and plans: be brave, yes, joy, bliss, love, confidence, embrace your superpowers, fabulous, creativity, cheer, peace, happy, gratitude, create, make it happen....
