What is Lovely Never Dies

 "What is lovely never dies, but passes into another loveliness.

Star-dust or sea-foam. Flower or winged air."

-Thomas Bailey Aldrich

This past weekend our family joined the many, many thousands of families who have lost someone they loved to COVID. May their memory live on through all that is beautiful.

Chocolate Covered Deliciousness

Here are two more commissioned pieces I've recently completed for the same client I've been working with. I shipped them yesterday and can't wait to see photos of all of them hanging in their headquarters.

I Am

I attended an artist talk by Maria Palacios that was hosted by Art Spark Texas last week. Along with so many amazing things she told, showed, and taught us, she did a writing prompt. I used a wood panel for my writing, which then became a palette for a painting I was working on, and then it became the flowers you see below. You can see a bit of my writing at the bottom.

Please check out Maria's instagram (@goddess_on_wheels_) and Art Spark Texas', too (@artsparktx).

We Are Made of Star Stuff

"The Universe is all that is, or ever was, or ever will be. Our contemplations of the cosmos stir us. There's a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation as if a distant memory of falling from a great height. We know we are approaching the grandest of mysteries.

The cosmos is within us. We are made of star stuff."

Do Not Tame the Wild Within You

"Do not tame the wild within you;

embrace your passions;

be a savage to your dreams; seize the day;

embrace the restless warrior in you;

this is your life; find your inner strength;

you're free to choose."

-dch

This canvas has had several lives. In 2017 when #metoo was in the news I'd painted a young woman, owning both her fear and bravery. I'd used gesso and charcoal and you can still see some of her in the background. A couple of weeks ago I decided to paint over this piece and began using the canvas as a palette for a commissioned piece I'm working on. As I used more and more colors it became more and more powerful. I could feel the life force of the woman in the background coming through and I knew it was time to have this canvas become its own piece.

Image description: an abstract painting with oranges, browns, whites, and golds. The gold paint shimmers and some of the white has black spots of different sizes and shapes painted on it. There are drips of India ink flowing down the canvas and squiggles/dots created with ink around some of the shapes created by the paint in the background. The India ink also shimmers.

Counting Up or Counting Down

Whether you are counting up or counting down is a matter of perspective and choice.

This piece was originally a palette for some recent work. I was about to put more paint on it yesterday when this flower popped out at me. She just needed a bit of defining to bring her more forward.

Letting Things Go Allows Us to Bloom

I have been thinking a lot lately about how few things I really need and have been doing a rather huge purge...the kitchen, closet, etc. My heart has been particularly filled by giving away my older works of art that had never found their perfect home...and now they have. (Love my neighborhood Buy Nothing group!!)

I Love Dolmas

This is the second in a series of food related commissions I'm working on. This was commissioned by the same person as the last one as a gift for his dear friend (who happens to love dolmas). I'm pretty fond of dolmas, too!

P.S. The veins in the grape leaves are gold and they sparkle.

Find the Life you Want

 "Start over, my darling. Be brave enough to find the life you want and courageous enough to chase it.

Then start over and love yourself the way you were always meant to."

-Madalyn Beck

My Process: I crumpled the paper, as often happens to our hearts, and slowly added layer after layer finding new pathways. While it will never be restored as before, uncrumpled, it has found its way to beauty and a new life.

I've been working on a commissioned piece and my pieces always have companion pieces that I work on during drying time. This one is particularly connected to the commissioned piece. I'll share it at some point soon.

Goddess of the Flames

This piece is super tiny, only 3"x3". I love creating finished paintings on pieces of wood I've used as paint palettes. The final painting is the result of many happy accidents.

In the Mind of a Cat

I began this as a test piece for a commission. After I learned from it what I needed to I kept adding layers...and then the cat appeared...right there at the bottom. We have cats. Two of them. And they are both totally quirky in polar opposite ways. I have absolutely no idea what goes through their heads or what motivates them to do the things they do. What I know for sure is that I both love it and totally don't get it.

Fun fact, while I was using a hair dryer to dry the final layers of this painting I turned the air flow just the right direction to accidentally blow a miniature easel holding a miniature painting I'd done a while back off of a shelf and directly into the toilet. Such a cat thing to do!
