My First Love

When I first started painting in 2011 I painted a lot of flowers...seriously, so, so, so many flowers. They continue to be my "go to" subject matter and always leave me uplifted. After painting a delightfully long series of abstracts I revisited the flowers I love so much.

Wake up Full of Gratitude

Each day when I wake up I lie quietly with my eyes closed and think of people, animals, events, etc. that I'm grateful for. To keep this from becoming a repetitive list I make sure that at least one thing I'm thinking of is new, having never been a part of my list. I've been doing this for at least a couple of years, perhaps more. When  I first started I set my alarm 15 minutes early so I'd have time. Now my body wakes itself up early on its own allowing my mind all the time it needs.

The Wisdom of Trees

I'm currently reading The Overstory by Richard Powers. The theme of trees is beautifully woven throughout and has spilled into my art. It's a lovely book if anyone is looking for something to read.

Behind the Chimney

When I was a kid I spent countless hours on the roof of our house. I'd climb up the loquat tree and make that shingled surface my kingdom. One of my favorite spots was behind the chimney where I could not be seen (or found) from below. I took all kinds of things up there...dolls, Hitchcock Mystery Magazines, umbrellas (to slow my descent when I jumped off of the roof), snacks, and friends on occasion. I was thinking of this special spot as I painted this.

All That is Visible

Atlanta State Park in northeast Texas is absolutely gorgeous. I sat one evening, warmed by a crackling campfire, and looked up far beyond the towering pine trees at the dark, dark sky filled with stars and a delightfully bright planet.

The Moment Before the Calm Returns

I posted a photo of this piece, still all drippy and wet, and asked friends what they saw. My friend and amazing artist, Mindy Graber, wrote something that seemed just so right.

"Beautiful... makes me think of sitting on a dune at the ocean when a gust of wind swirls all the elements before my eyes, the moment before the calm returns."

With a little help from a hair dryer the piece was just dry enough for me to display at last weekend's Studio Tour.

Eyes on the Sky

Last night my dad texted me wondering if I'd also like to have "eyes on the sky." Of course I did! I called him back and David and I went out in our front yard and through the gift of technology my dad, his wife, David, and I were all looking up at the same big sky marveling at planets.
